Last week, I had the excitement of having my microfiction projected onto Fremantle's Port Authority Building along with several other fantastic writers!

This was a story inspired by past years' sailors and what they would think if they returned to shore today.

During my research, I learned that much of the township is built on a quarry and the limestone supports some of the older buildings. It's a town built on sweat and tears, and from the hopes and losses of people. It's about sharing our stories and understanding change. We're not the same people then and now.

The Totally Lit Festival projections ran for a week and featured several amazing local authors. I was humbled to join them in this installation.

Aurealis Awards is Australis'a premier speculative fiction awards and I can't believe I'm one of the finalists in the Best Fantasy Short Story category with the story Remembering the Hungry Ghosts, which was a shortlisted finalist in Best Australian Yarn 2024.

Thanks to all, especially those who've followed from the early micro-fiction pieces I used to post. All your encouragement and cheering has helped me grow and become a better writer.

Congratulations to all other finalists. So many great Australian writers who've had stories published in 2024 to be nominated for this award. The winner of each category will be announced at the ceremony on 4th May, so I have my fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone on this list!

Best Australian Yarn 2024 Shortlist!

I made it into the Top 10! Not too bad from 6020 entries. Tough competition amongst so many great longlisted writers, and listening to the snippets wonderfully read by Performing Arts students of WAAPA, the level rose as the shortlisted were named, and reached professional level as we got to the winner. Thanks @thewestaustralian for a great event and competition.

It was an exciting night meeting other writers, poets, and actors who attended, as well as judges, and staff and family of the sponsors and organisers. (I didn't stay stuck to the wall!) Thanks everyone for your encouragement and support for handling nerves for the night! 🥰

Where to from here? Onwards to finding the next story and sending in the next submission!

Did you know Cantonese Pork Trotters is a body-warming dish that many of my generation can recall parents and grandmas making for our health? There are many versions of this recipe, including the 'migrant' version that is within this story. This was taught to me by my aunty, and in my biased opinion, it tastes just as good!

In this story, I wanted to show how food brings back so many memories, good and bad, but how it can also be healing if we let it. If you try out this recipe, let me know what you think! It might be an acquired taste...

is excited. My short story placed with high commendation in the recent KSP Writer's Centre competition!

Congrats to the winners and all who placed in it, and a big shout out to @ksp_writers_centre for running this competition. It's opportunities like these that show why human art and literature should never be replaced by AI.

Because I love efficiency, this story is also a recipe that I'd love to share with you one day. It's still on submission at a few magazines so I'm hoping to be able to post the link for reading soon?!

New story in Blood+Honey

This was a fun little story to write about the pettiness of house gods and why you should never have too many of them close to each other.

It was inspired by a Furious Fiction Competition run by Australian Writers' Centre that ran around Chinese New Year 2025. I'd seen the furious faced duo in pictures and never knew who they were until I did some research. I found there are several versions of their story, but ultimately, they guard doors and keep the evil spirits out.

Fu, Lu, and Shou (the Sanxing Trio) are obviously not evil spirits but represent happiness, longevity, and good health. Which is why we want them around a house. Buuuut... as mentioned, there is such a thing as too many good things too close together! 😆

is rejected

A part of doing a lot of short story submissions is getting back a lot of rejections. The good thing is, the shell's gotten a lot thicker than when I first started submitting! Most of these days, it slides right off, but very occasionally, just when the hopes are a little higher, getting that email that says thanks but no thanks (or in colloquial Aussie--yeah, nah...) hurts... just a little.

If you've gotten something turned down, take that little moment to be sad. But remember that what doesn't work for one person, works for another. There's a reason we're all different. Take a breath, then step back out there and send a gain. Keep trying and you'll find your peeps!
