ORIGINAL SCORE BY EMMOLEI SANKOFA by @emmolei

My lil SCOREBOARD. Not everything. Just a glimpse at what’s moved the needle. More unfolding and on the way. by @emmolei

Nov 14th, 2pm at the Plaza Theatre!

Come watch @enongomovie w/ me × Animatior Ariel Paxton and Executive Producer / Composer EmmoLei Sankofa as we celebrate the incomparable Sammus and the first feature length film with an all Black women animation team! by @emmolei

5 years have flown by. Wow. Horror Noire flew under the radar so I’m bringing it back around. Some of my fav music ever. This was one of the projects that stretched me. Pictured here is me, Robin Givens, and Nick Lazo. What you’re listening to here is the “Horror Noire Opening Theme.”

🎶 The Web from “Bride Before You.”
“Bride Before You” was a new experience for me because it was a period piece set in 1898, so I had to dig into a different tool box to mold the musical language. It was kinda the first time I got to test my orchestral chops.

🎶 Fresh Start from “The Lake” performed by @mattlittle19. (Variation of the lullaby)
The producers invited me to set, which gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in all of the worlds that were being brought to life. I wrote an original lullaby, complete with lyrics, that was woven throughout “The Lake”, building toward Lesley’s on-screen performance.

🎶 Dream State from “Daddy”

🎶 The Root Woman from “Bride Before You”

The amazing folks that helped me bring this score to life.

🎶 Sam’s Sprint from “Sundown”

If you’ve never seen this before, go stream it on AMC+/Shudder or Prime. If you’ve seen, tap back in and revisit it. You might see and hear something new. by @emmolei

“Enongo” is an award-winning, feature-length, animation-documentary hybrid and the inspiring story of rapper/producer/Ph.D. candidate, Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo, a.k.a., Sammus. With her autobiographical and afrofuturism-inspired music, Enongo tackles various subjects including (but certainly not limited to) mental health, growing up, and relationships. Through a combination of actuality and animation, “Enongo” tells a universally-relevant, intimate, empowering story of identity, artistic creation, and survival. Notably, “Enongo” is the first feature-length film of any genre in history to have an all-Black-women animation team.

Spooky season or whatever. Only spooky thing about my life is how much of what I said I was gonna do actually came to pass. Here’s what’s moving in October. 👻🎃

In the states and across the pond. International premiere. Also, grateful to run it back at @outonfilm and @brooklynhorrorfest this year with new work! Thank you.

This film has had CRAZY legs for two years. Still pumping. @cowboy_cooks and I have another one on the way so if you enjoyed this, hold tight. 😉 by @emmolei

Pulled up to @outonfilm again this year.

Original Score by Yours Truly. My kid let me borrow her voice for one of the most important cues in the film. Thanks you @jahanorion for playing piano and helping with violin music prep.

📜

Shoutout to our Director, @destineestewart_creates. Thanks for using horror to call out a very specific issue that we must STILL be mindful of today.

COLOR INSIDE THE LINES.

DREAMS.

OMAD.

Ok bye. by @emmolei

We all start somewhere.

I’ve been immersed in music for my entire life, but when I think about definitive moments that propelled me to where I’ve landed, I think about my very first album, Stereosexuality.

Always grateful for the first few people that saw my potential while I was still figuring it out. I didn’t know what I was doing. Was just being young and bold. Present day Emmo thanks Emmo from the past for putting it all on the line. Wouldn’t be where I am now without taking this step.

Always bet on yourself. Spent my senior dues money to print these CDs. That’s how bad I wanted it. I’ve kept impeccable records of my journey over the years. This is sketch was the beginning of me figuring out the design for the CD art.

Top left: I was figuring out sequencing/track order here.
Bottom: Who did I think I was? 😂 My spirit knew something I didn’t. But, in all fairness, they did ask me to sign the CD.

Folks don’t do back covers anymore but @mbeyarts snapped on the art for this album.

My original artist name was “EmmoLei Poitier Deutch.”. A few months after releasing this album, I dropped that and chose SANKOFA because I too understood that I needed to align myself with a name that embodied my unfolding. I didn’t have all the answers then, but I followed my intuition. My momma named me Emily so it’s EmmoLei, like Emily. The irony is that I didn’t see this video until years into my journey, but it just reveals how spirit moves through many to amplify something that needs to be done and said. The universe repeats itself. We’re all here for something and even though we show up differently, there are things that will reveal who ya people are.

Secret Love Affair.

Special thanks to the amazing writer and director @destineestewart_creates for this opportunity. Also, shoutout to @jahanorion for playing 🎹 and string transcriptions!

At this point, the @ayfkmmovie has been around the world and back so many times that I’ve lost count. This film has probably had the most movement, festival wise, out of any film I’ve ever worked on. Thank you @cowboy_cooks & @zenpace for your brilliance. by @emmolei
