We all start somewhere.

I’ve been immersed in music for my entire life, but when I think about definitive moments that propelled me to where I’ve landed, I think about my very first album, Stereosexuality.

Always grateful for the first few people that saw my potential while I was still figuring it out. I didn’t know what I was doing. Was just being young and bold. Present day Emmo thanks Emmo from the past for putting it all on the line. Wouldn’t be where I am now without taking this step.

Always bet on yourself. Spent my senior dues money to print these CDs. That’s how bad I wanted it. I’ve kept impeccable records of my journey over the years. This is sketch was the beginning of me figuring out the design for the CD art.

My original artist name was “EmmoLei Poitier Deutch.”. A few months after releasing this album, I dropped that and chose SANKOFA because I too understood that I needed to align myself with a name that embodied my unfolding. I didn’t have all the answers then, but I followed my intuition. My momma named me Emily so it’s EmmoLei, like Emily. The irony is that I didn’t see this video until years into my journey, but it just reveals how spirit moves through many to amplify something that needs to be done and said. The universe repeats itself. We’re all here for something and even though we show up differently, there are things that will reveal who ya people are.
