Interzone Editions is immensely proud to announce 𝑨𝒎𝒂 𝑳𝒆𝒍 𝑯𝒂𝒘𝒂 / أَما لِلهَوى — the first solo full-length album by Tunisia-born, Montreal-based oud player and composer Emna Mâaref. Open for pre-order as of today.

Two singles out now everywhere: ‘Ouverture’25’ & ‘Wa Na7ya.’

Full album out on vinyl + digital July 30th.

Stream, download, purchase — link in bio.

This is the first set of compositions that the virtuoso oud player entirely dedicates to the instrument that she carried, and that carried her around the world for more than twenty years. A work borne of mutual devotion, of a love and friendship that exile can never erase.
Recorded in no more than one day, improvised or partially composed, but never written, these ten pieces unfold with a patience in development and a mastery of sound that place Mâaref among the greats of the eleven strings. This is the music of a warrior and a poet, a music that, though full of secrets, demands to be felt. Its questions arrive as commands: “has longing no hold over you…?” “Yes, I am longing, and within me is a burning ache / But someone like me does not let her secret be known.”

All music composed and performed by @emnamaaref
Bass by Lounis Adjissa, Saxophone by Habib El Bardi on Wa Na7ya.
Recorded by @radwanghazimoumneh at hotel2tango.

“This was a dream, to record this kind of record. This is what I needed to express certain emotions.”

Read the NicheMTL interview with the Tunisian-Canadian musician @emnamaaref, who speaks with us about longing, displacement, and her newest album, Ama Lel Hawa / أَما لِلهَوى, released via @interzone_editions.

Late June 2006.

Do you see the little girl holding the oud in this photo? That was me, 20 years ago.

Back then, I was just beginning to discover what music could be, and what it felt like to step onto a stage for the first time.

Life carried me in many directions. I followed a completely different academic path, worked in different fields, walked away, came back, and questioned this dream more times than I can count.
But through it all, one thing never left me:
I never stopped dreaming.

Twenty years later, my first solo oud album, is finally here.
Tomorrow, it will be released on all digital platforms, and on vinyl!

Thank you to everyone who has walked this journey with me, thank you حتى عالكلمة الطيبة
