Thank you to everyone who came to Sounds and Solidarity! After expenses, we collected $1,000, and a generous member who chooses to remain anonymous has matched that amount. We’re sending the amount of $1,000 to each of the Elham Fund and the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, both wonderful organizations sending funds directly to Gazans in need.

Today is Bandcamp Friday, which is a good time to support our work by purchasing our latest releases, if you have the means to do so.

Last week, we released 𝑨𝒎𝒂 𝑳𝒆𝒍 𝑯𝒂𝒘𝒂 / أَما لِلهَوى — the first solo full-length album by Tunisia-born, Montreal-based oud player and composer Emna Mâaref.

Full album out on vinyl + digital everywhere, soon available in record stores in Montreal — link in bio. (If you live in Montreal and want to avoid shipping costs, feel free to DM us).

"A music that, though full of secrets, demands to be felt. Its questions arrive as commands: has longing no hold over you…? Hence a style often pressing, urgent, fearlessly reaching towards the void: hawa. But in this reach, its voice remains unhurried, present, open, for only it knows what it hides: “Yes, I am longing, and within me is a burning ache / But someone like me does not let her secret be known” (بَلى أَنا مُشتاقٌ وَعِندِيَ لَوعَةٌ وَلَكِنَّ مِثلي لايُذاعُ لَهُ سِرُّ)."

All music composed and performed by @emnamaaref
Bass by Lounis Adjissa on A4 and A5, Saxophone and Electronics by Habib El Bardi on A5 and B1.
Recorded by @radwanghazimoumneh at hotel2tango.
