I’m at the Salon des Véhicules Intermédiaires (Conférence of Intermediate Vehicles) in Rennes where more than 40 builders are present to display and offer trials of their small electric “no-license” vehicles.

Smaller, lighter, slower—these electric pedal assist vehicles replace cars, trucks and vans for all sorts of trips, with and without passengers, up to 28 mph (45kph).

For example, the Midipile is intended for deliveries and as a maintenance vehicle for professional use. It has space for one driver and up to 600 lbs (300 kg) of cargo, with a range of 60 miles (100 km).

France is investing strategically in replacing gas-powered fleets with electric and pedal-assisted fleets, in both the private and public sectors.

There simply aren’t enough natural resources in the world for everyone to have an electric car—which is why we have a responsibility to develop smaller, lighter, smarter vehicles.

Clermont-Ferrand is a city of about 150,000 nestled in the Puy-de-Dôme mountains and surrounded on all sides by national parkland. It has light rail, bus service, bike share and TER train service. Plus a massive pedestrian plaza called Place Jaude. Before we were wowed by the infrastructure in Vancouver (BC), we were wowed by the infrastructure in Portland. Of note were the neighborhood greenways (bike priority streets), one-seat light rail ride to and from the airport, and the Tilikum Crossing bridge—which is a light rail, bus, bike and ped only bridge over the Willamette River (i.e. car-free bridge, and so quiet!).

Throughout our West Coast trip, we found drivers in Oregon especially were much more likely to yield to us when we were pedestrians or on bikes.
