What if teaching empathy could start with one simple question? 💛

Children aren’t born knowing how to recognize emotions—their own or someone else’s. They learn through conversations, practice, and caring adults who help them put feelings into words.

That’s why I created these “How Am I?” Emotion Cards.

🌱 Each card includes:
💛 An emotion word and child-friendly definition
💬 A conversation starter on the back to encourage meaningful discussions

These aren’t just flashcards—they’re invitations to connect.

✨ When children build a rich emotion vocabulary, they are more likely to:
🧠 Recognize and name their own feelings (self-awareness)
❤️ Understand how others might be feeling (empathy)
🌈 Express emotions with words instead of behaviors
🌿 Develop healthy self-regulation skills over time
🤝 Build stronger friendships and relationships

Research suggests that when children can accurately identify and label their emotions, they’re better equipped to manage them. After all, it’s much easier to solve a problem when you know what you’re feeling.

You don’t need long lessons.

Sometimes all it takes is one card, one question, and a few minutes of genuine conversation.

Those small moments often become the ones children remember most. 💛

If you’re looking for simple, research-informed Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) resources for home or the classroom, you’ll find these “How Am I?” Emotion Cards in our Etsy shop.

🍃By encouraging contentment, positivity, and optimism, these cards plant the seeds of long-term happiness. They aren’t just tools for personal growth but conversation starters that bring families closer together, making gratitude a daily practice.

🧠Start fostering a mindset of gratitude in your child today—because happiness begins with appreciating what we already have.

Resharing a reel from the @paanobato podcast with @iamsuperbianca , I am humbled and thrilled to have this opportunity to discuss the importance of recognizing difficult emotions and the need to be seen, felt, and heard. I admire how Bianca passionately wants to promote mental health in our communities. I believe that changing our society to be more kind, compassionate, and emotionally healthy is possible if we are willing to listen, learn and grow to be the person God created us to be. Did you know that validating your child’s feelings can support healthy brain development? 🧠❤️

When children feel heard, understood, and emotionally safe, their brains are better able to manage stress, process emotions, and learn.

Here are 5 ways emotional validation supports your child’s developing brain:

1. It helps calm the brain’s alarm system.
When a child feels understood and supported, the amygdala, which helps detect threats, may become less reactive. A calm, reassuring adult can help a distressed child feel safe.

2. It helps reduce the stress response.
Warm, responsive interactions can help regulate the body’s stress response, including cortisol levels. Children learn that difficult feelings do not have to be faced alone.

3. It builds trust and emotional security.
When parents consistently acknowledge their child’s feelings, children develop a stronger sense of safety and trust. They learn that their emotions are welcome, even when their behavior needs guidance.

4. It supports thinking and learning.
Strong emotions can make it difficult for children to focus, listen, and solve problems. When children feel calmer, they are better able to use the thinking and learning skills they are developing.

5. It strengthens emotional regulation over time.
Children are not born knowing how to manage big feelings. Through repeated experiences of being comforted, understood, and guided, they gradually develop the ability to regulate their own emotions.

Remember: Validation does not mean agreeing with every behavior or giving children everything they want.

You can say, “I understand you’re angry because you want that toy. It’s okay to feel angry, but I won’t let you hit.”

You are acknowledging the feeling while maintaining a healthy boundary.

Sometimes, the most helpful words are simple:

❤️ “I hear you.”

❤️ “Your feelings matter.”

❤️ “I’m here with you.”

Every time we respond with empathy, we help children build the emotional skills they will carry into adulthood.

Save this reminder and share it with a parent or educator who might need it today.

They need you to calm down when they are feeling not calm. Calm invites calm. We can’t force them to calm down if we are not. Your calm is their safe place. 💛 Every time you pause instead of react, you show your child that big feelings can be handled with love, patience, and strength.

🌿 You’re not just calming the moment—you’re shaping their future resilience. 🌈

8 Ways Parents Can Help Children Stand Up Against Bullying ❤️

Children aren’t born knowing how to handle bullying. They learn through everyday experiences, conversations, and the guidance of adults they trust.

Here are 8 ways we can help:

1. Model healthy boundaries.
Children learn by watching us. When we respectfully disagree or speak up against unfair treatment, we show them that protecting their boundaries is healthy.

2. Take their feelings seriously.
Listen when your child shares something hurtful. Avoid immediately saying, “Just ignore it.” Feeling heard encourages them to open up again.

3. Build confidence daily.
Let children make choices, share opinions, and solve small problems. These everyday experiences help them trust their own voice.

4. Teach assertiveness, not aggression.
Show children how to speak firmly and clearly without shouting, insulting, or hurting others.

5. Keep conversations open.
Ask about friendships and daily experiences. Questions like “Did anything make you uncomfortable today?” can open meaningful conversations.

6. Talk about healthy friendships.
Help children understand respect, fairness, and inclusion. Explain that disagreements happen, but repeated humiliation or mistreatment is never acceptable.

7. Build a circle of trusted adults.
Help your child identify people they can approach when something goes wrong. Remind them to keep seeking help until someone listens and takes action.

8. Nurture their self-worth.
Celebrate their efforts, interests, and unique qualities, not just achievements. Children need to know their value doesn’t depend on others’ approval.

❤️ Remember: Teaching children to stand up for themselves doesn’t mean expecting them to face bullying alone.

Adults have a responsibility to listen, intervene, and keep children safe.

Let’s raise children who are kind, confident, and know they deserve respect.

Save and share with another parent or educator.

Children do not always have the words to tell us how they feel. Sometimes, we notice it in their tears, their silence, their tense little bodies, or their need to stay close. 💛

Tuning in begins with slowing down and paying attention.

🌿 Notice what happens before they become upset. Are they tired, hungry, overwhelmed, or finding a change difficult?

🌿 Be curious. “You’ve been very quiet. Would you like some company?”

🌿 Offer words gently. “You seem disappointed that playtime ended.” Give them room to correct you.

🌿 Allow time. Sitting beside them quietly can help when talking feels difficult.

We can welcome their feelings while keeping clear limits: “It’s okay to feel angry. I won’t let you hit. I’m here to help.”

You will not understand every signal straight away. Keep observing, listening, and getting to know your child. Each small moment of attention helps them feel heard, even before they can explain. 🤍

Save this reminder for the days when your child’s feelings are hard to understand.

😴💤 Enough sleep = A healthier brain, body, and emotional well-being! 🧠❤️

Did you know that sleep plays an important role in how children feel, think, behave, and grow?

When children get enough quality sleep, their brains and bodies have time to rest, recover, and develop.

🌿 Here’s why sleep matters for kids:

🧠 1. Emotional Regulation
Sleep helps children manage big feelings, cope with frustration, and respond more calmly to everyday challenges. Lack of sleep can make children more irritable and emotionally sensitive.

❤️ 2. Mental Health
Consistent, healthy sleep supports emotional well-being and is associated with lower risks of anxiety, depression, and other mental health difficulties.

🎯 3. Attention and Learning
During sleep, the brain strengthens memories and processes new information. Well-rested children are better able to focus, learn, and solve problems.

🤝 4. Social Skills and Relationships
Getting enough sleep helps children manage their reactions, cooperate with others, and navigate social situations.

💪 5. Physical Growth and Immunity
Sleep supports growth hormone release, tissue repair, immune function, and overall physical development.

🌈 6. Behavior and Self-Control
When children are overtired, they may struggle with impulse control, patience, and following instructions. Sometimes what looks like challenging behavior is simply a tired brain asking for rest.

💡 A gentle reminder for parents and educators:

Before labeling a child as difficult, overly emotional, or misbehaving, consider whether they are getting enough sleep.

Sleep is one of the foundations of children’s emotional, mental, and physical health.

💛 Protecting children’s sleep is also caring for their emotional well-being.

When we have words for our emotions, we begin to understand what we feel. 💛

Sometimes, we feel something deeply but struggle to explain it. Is it sadness, disappointment, frustration, loneliness, or worry?

Learning to name our emotions helps us recognize what is happening inside us, express our needs, and make sense of our experiences.

And this matters even more for children.

Children experience big emotions long before they have the vocabulary to describe them.

🌱 Naming emotions helps children recognize and understand their feelings.

🌱 Building emotional vocabulary gives children words to express what they are experiencing instead of relying only on crying, shouting, or other behaviors.

🌱 Feeling understood helps children feel heard, safe, and connected to the adults around them.

🌱 Developing emotional awareness lays the foundation for empathy, self-regulation, and healthy relationships.

This is why we created Emosyon Bibo Emotion Cards, a simple tool to help children explore, name, and talk about their feelings through everyday conversations.

Because every emotion deserves to be understood, and every child deserves the words to express it. 💛

❤️ HOW TO REALLY LOVE A CHILD
16 little things parents can practice every day.

❤️ 1. Be with. Put your phone away, sit beside your child, and give them your full attention.

❤️ 2. Stop trying to fix. When they’re upset, listen first. Ask, “Do you want help or just a hug?”

❤️ 3. Say yes as often as you can. Say yes to jumping in puddles, building forts, or five more minutes of play when possible.

❤️ 4. Let them make noise. Allow singing, laughing, drumming, and loud play when it’s safe and appropriate.

❤️ 5. If they’re crabby, put them in water. Try a warm bath, supervised water play, or washing toys together to help them relax.

❤️ 6. Read books out loud with joy. Use funny voices, make animal sounds, and let them turn the pages.

❤️ 7. Encourage silly. Wear funny hats, invent ridiculous songs, or pretend to be dinosaurs together.

❤️ 8. Giggle a lot. Share jokes, make silly faces, and laugh at the little things.

❤️ 9. Remember how really small they are. Get down to their eye level and adjust your expectations to their age and abilities.

❤️ 10. Search out the positive. Notice their small efforts. Say, “I saw how you waited for your turn!”

❤️ 11. Keep the gleam in your eye. Smile when they enter the room. Let them see how happy you are to see them.

❤️ 12. Teach feelings. Name emotions in everyday moments. “You’re disappointed because playtime is over.”

❤️ 13. Realize how important it is to be a child. Protect time for play, curiosity, imagination, and doing things slowly.

❤️ 14. Stop yelling. Pause, lower your voice, and give clear instructions. If you shout, apologize and reconnect.

❤️ 15. Surprise them. Leave a sweet note, plan a picnic on the floor, or invite them to an unexpected adventure.

❤️ 16. Express your love. A LOT. Say “I love you,” offer hugs, and remind them that your love doesn’t depend on their behavior.

🌱 You don’t have to do everything perfectly. What matters is showing up, reconnecting, and finding little ways to love your child every day.

Which of these will you practice today?

This made me stop and really think.

I take pride in my work as a teacher. I love what I do, but sometimes I find myself measuring my worth by how productive I am and how much I accomplish.

And in the busyness of life, I sometimes forget that the people who need me most are waiting for me at home.

I spend my days teaching and nurturing other people’s children, but my own children deserve that same patience, attention, and love. ❤️

So here are 5 things I want to be more intentional about as a parent:

1. Put down my phone. 📱
Be present. My children deserve my attention, not just my leftover time and energy.

2. Talk and really listen. 💬
Ask about their day, feelings, worries, and little discoveries. Small conversations build meaningful connections.

3. Invest in my parenting. 📚
Read books, pray for wisdom, keep learning, and be open to advice and feedback. I am still growing as a parent, too.

4. Ask my children how I can improve. ❤️
Give them a voice. Ask what they need more of from me and listen without becoming defensive.

5. Enjoy the ordinary moments. 🌿
The laughter, cuddles, silly conversations, and little adventures. Childhood is happening right now, and I don’t want to miss it.

I know I won’t get it right every day. But I want to keep showing up, learning, and loving them.

One day, my children may not remember how much I accomplished, but I hope they remember how loved, safe, and valued they felt growing up.

And that, to me, is a life well spent. ❤️

Here are 8 things to AVOID when your child is having big feelings:

1. Treating their feelings as unimportant or “not a big deal.”
2. Ignoring, avoiding, or dismissing their feelings.
3. Trying to make difficult emotions stop as quickly as possible.
4. Minimizing how strongly they feel.
5. Downplaying what happened or what caused the emotion.
6. Thinking every emotion is a problem you need to fix.
7. Simply waiting for the feeling to pass without helping your child understand or work through it.
8. Trying to quickly turn negative feelings into positive ones.

In Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child: The Heart of Parenting, Dr. John Gottman describes this as an emotion-dismissing approach to parenting.

When children’s emotions are repeatedly ignored, minimized, or dismissed, they may learn that their feelings are not important or that they should hide them instead of learning how to understand and manage them.

So, what can we do instead? ❤️

• Listen when your child is experiencing difficult emotions.
• Use emotional moments as opportunities to connect and understand your child better.
• Avoid rushing them out of their feelings. Stay with them, acknowledge what they feel, and offer support when they need it.
• Help them name what they are feeling and, when they are ready, think about what they can do next.

Children do not need every uncomfortable feeling to disappear immediately. They need caring adults who can help them make sense of what they feel.
