I am a sucker for birth videos, you can feel the power and sacred beauty of childbirth. The gift of bearing children is such a blessing. I wanted to share some of the insights captured by my doula in this video of my sixth baby being born last summer.

Babies go through a series of movements during birth, and your ability to move with them can make for a smoother birth. That is one of the reasons I am so passionate about serving mamas. The adjustment helps your communication pathways between your brain and body work more efficiently, think uttering contractions, hormone production, respiration and circulation(there’s more), it also helps optimize space for your baby to get into a more ideal position and it helps with your own biomechanics. Your ability to move and shift is so beneficial to avoiding unnecessary intervention. There is nothing wrong with help when it’s needed, but the ability to move your body means that you can create space in the pelvis as your baby moves through it.

“Dr. Hernandez, Alyxandriah, and Jenna all shared incredible stories of their patient's strength and resilience. While every story was different, they all shared common themes. Women are often told that something is out of reach or impossible.
Then women find other women to support them, and they accomplish the impossible.”

So grateful for this opportunity offered by @gratielunaco and @stoneoakcitylifestyle to share a bit of my story. Thank you @erinlyons_writesandedits for your work on this piece and for helping us share our passions with this community.

Honored to share in this opportunity with @mobilemidwifeofsanantonio and @withjoybirthandwellness, two wonderful women also serving the perinatal population in San Antonio and surrounding areas.

I remember as a child going to a class where I was taught how to swaddle a baby. Maybe as a new parent you have been to a similar class. As a mom of six and a perinatal and pediatric chiropractor, I have a bit of a squabble with this teaching.

If you’re a new parent, and you have realized that your baby has a natural reflex that causes them to startle when you lay them down or when their head shifts or when they hear a loud sound, then you probably think not swaddling is a horrible idea.

Let’s talk a little bit about why that reflex develops in the first place. Early in the third trimester, the Moro reflex develops as part of the nervous systems survival mechanism for our body. When a baby is born that sudden change in environment and support triggers this reflex to occur, causing an expansion of the lungs and chest for them to begin breathing, something they didn’t need to do before now. Amazing!

Swaddling limits that reflex, and is great for keeping a baby calm and quiet, but it might actually be doing more harm than good. When your baby is wrapped up, they can’t perform this reflex and we miss the opportunity to integrate it properly.

What does that mean?
It means that between 4 to 6 months of age, this reflex should begin to diminish and eventually stop. If it doesn’t, it can lead to developmental delays and a retained reflex that can show up in different ways in their body.

Swaddling also contributes to more tension in your baby’s body by preventing free movement.

So what do I suggest instead? Place your baby in positions where they stretch their body out and back on purpose. Letting a baby hang back over your leg with some gentle support, tummy time and different strengthening activities like rolling and normal movement create balance as voluntary movement over powers involuntary movement like this startle response. Regular chiropractic care with a pediatric chiropractor helps support their nervous system development and teaches parents how to support their baby at home with stretches and exercises appropriate to their age and development.

If you want to see positive change in your babies feeding, function and temperament, then we need to work as a team.

When you come in, we go over a detailed history and assessment, I walk through everything finding with you and send you home educated, informed and prepared.

The work I do in the office is 15-30% of the work, the work I send you home with means that we don’t start at square 1 each time I hold your baby. The work I send you home with means improved movement, improved quality of life and progress each visit.

Parents report:
😴 Improved sleep
🤱🏻 Improved feeds
💩 Regular bowel movements
👶 Happier babies
👏🏼 Improved stability and flexibility

When we work as a team, their care becomes less of a bandaid and more of a lasting change.

What else do new parents expect from their pregnancy and birth experience?

Out of my 6 pregnancies, only one of my births started with a pop of my membranes(that I heard and felt, followed by a gush). It was my first VBAC, I was cooking dinner and anout to be 41 weeks. We didn’t rush anywhere, I continued cooking dinner, sat and ate dinner between rolling contractions and waited for my birth team to arrive at my house. Sometimes membranes rupture and contractions don’t start. (A visit to your chiropractor can be helpful in this situation, baby might not be in an ideal position and some body work can help. Chiropractic care is also about communication between your brain and body, so let’s make sure those pathways aren’t being interfered with by stress on the body) Definitely let your provider know.

My first pregnancy, I had a high leak that resulted in a trickle of fluids. I felt an excited and rushed things and ultimately ended with a c-section(there’s more to this story of course).

2 of my babies membranes ruptured spontaneously while I was in active labor and nursed a thirsty toddler. My midwife and doula were already present. The nipple stimulation from breastfeeding or pumping stimulates oxytocin and can help stimulate more regular contractions. After the rupture, some of babies buoyancy is lost and labor can intensify and speed up. They both came shortly after, but it still took time.

My 5th pregnancy, I had very strong membranes(I have my theories on that, but we’ll save that story for another time. At some point, I asked my midwife to rupture my membranes because with every push, my membranes came down full of fluid, but my baby wasn’t coming. With a tug of war and a lot of effort, he was finally born on my bed in a runners start position.

My most recent pregnancy was a spontaneous rupture when I was already in the birth pool and only a couple of contractions before she was born. It brought such relief followed by intensity.

The “breaking of your water” doesn’t typically look like the movies and neither does birth. What did this scenario look like for you?

I’m going to be real honest here. Any birth worker will tell you “what gets the baby in, gets the baby out”.

My adjustment helps create space and movement in your body which can help baby get into a better position. If labor isn’t starting because of babies position then yes this will be helpful, but you’re spouse is going to be a great help in getting that cervix prepped for birth. Go get that oxytocin flowing! Dance, hug, kiss, and hop under the sheets!

Your baby determines the physiology behind getting birth going and your body follows. Focus on positioning and good function and movement and trust the process 🫶🏼

Is this beautiful, pivotal moment a death to our ego, is it where we let go of control and become the process, is it much more complex than you’ve ever considered?

The release of control is not a turning over of power, it’s an invitation to shift our attention to awareness of our self and our baby. It’s a bid to curiosity, for what lies ahead is somewhere you’ve never been before, even if it is familiar.

Is your baby too big?

Will your baby fit through your pelvis? There are so many factors working for you. Let’s mitigate a common fear associated with birth with some simple anatomy facts.

These are three things you can do to help make space for your “Big” baby.

•Chiropractic care. Start care early, with a perinatal chiropractor. Not all chiropractic care is the same and it is helpful to work with someone who regularly works with the pregnant body.

•Doula Care. Find a doula you love and who is familiar with positions for birth and all of the stages and phases of birth. Changing positions, and moving through birth can make for a more favorable experience.

•Inform yourself. Interventions including pain relief disconnect you from your natural intuition. Breath work helps with the intensity of labor and allows you to ease your baby down and out. Movement is easier when you aren’t stuck in a bed and can listen to what you and your baby need.
