There are both pros and cons to getting a diagnosis!

Regardless, we always recommend starting with symptom management today, because you don’t have to put off pain relief for a label.

We created a pros & cons of a diagnosis video on YouTube that answers your FAQ! Watch it on YouTube @TheHypermobileDPT by @empoweredmovementpt

One of my favorite services we offer is long term hypermobility coaching!

We usually start together either in physical therapy to rehab an injury or work more closely in 1:1 hypermobility coaching to help you achieve your goals.

Maintenance can feel complicated! Do we just keep doing our PT exercises? How do we progress? How do we know when to switch things up? Oh no now my neck hurts so what do I do now?

We’re here to give you a movement plan and regularly adjust the plan to YOU, your body, your flares, and your goals.

We ride the ups and the downs with you because consistent movement at the right dosage is what helps us manage symptoms long term

It’s basically personal training, coaching, consulting, and your bff to share cute animal pics and wins + frustrations with, all by doctors of physical therapy who also deal with hypermobility, dysautonomia, and the rest.

Just trying to get some steps in without the sun completely taking me out. Trying to remember that, especially on low energy days, movement snacks are where it’s at! #pots #relyte by @empoweredmovementpt

You can be strong AND unstable!

Maybe you’re doing every exercise you’ve been told to do and can’t figure out why your pain isn’t getting better.

There’s benefit to strength training whether or not you do it “right or wrong”

But sometimes a few extra workouts focused on body awareness, limiting range of motion, connecting with your core, and building gentle stability can make a load of difference when it comes to tolerating movement

If strength training has left you with more headaches, neck tension shoulder blade knots, wrist and hand pain, pinchy hips, and that really painful point on your back where your rib cage meets your spine… your body may need a step back to focus on stability and tension management

Pocket PT offers a variety of stability programs that can supplement your current gym routine. We also offer 1:1 coaching if you need some extra guidance on how to manage your common problem areas

Swollen hands, rings don’t fit after exercise, or “sausage fingers”? This may be due to dysautonomia!

Dysautonomia can lead to blood pumping less efficiently. This can happen for a variety of reasons but one reason within the hypermobile community is due to veins that are “too stretchy”

Add in extra blood pumping with exercise and gravity and you may have significant swelling and heaviness of the hands.

Hands overhead with hands pumping can help blood pump more efficiently back to your heart. Compression is another strategy that can help with blood pooling in hands or feet.

Can’t hold more than a few seconds? Try doing this leaning into a wall first!

Wrist pain? Come up on fists, try on wall to build up stability gradually, or hold onto a dumbbell or towel to keep wrists neutral.

More long form content coming soon on elbow positioning, what’s normal, and how to activate stabilizer muscles. Make sure you’re following! 💖 by @empoweredmovementpt

There’s 2 sides to this:

1 You spend all of your time hyperextended, compensating, and/or in pain

2 You’re asymptomatic and/or hyperextension is required for your sport (contortionist)

For our clients, we encourage regular movement and stability work so we can access movement in a controlled way. The goal is usually to spend less time in hyperextended positions, as being reliant on these is often a compensation due to an underlying weakness. But, even Hypermobility specialists and physical therapists sometimes lock out without realizing it during fatigue.

Locking out *can* be a tool to give us short term stability when our muscles can’t

This is not saying go around and lock your knees all the time. But you also don’t have to be so scared of locking your knees that you don’t move at all.

Confident, stable, safe movement is the goal!
