Depictions and texts written by nuns shed light on conceptions of the female body, particularly that of nuns, during early Spanish American modernity. The extreme imitation of a model led to certain transgressions that show how these women sought a degree of agency, even when suffering and facing illness. We will explore different aspects of the body: in seclusion, suffering, sick, tempted by the devil, and even dead.
