A few digitized samples of the books I will be teaching in my writing workshop called Compilators, starting tomorrow and running continuously with multiple sessions.

Why am I so obsessed with commonplace books? They are “common” places, or notebooks where all thoughts and texts are held in common. They are also made by common people (including ladies). They are called, for instance,
The Commonplace Book of John of Grimestone.

Anyone can become an author of a commonplace book, and every book is unique.

My students have been making them for years and I am excited to invite my new students to continue with this practice at a time when the human mind and hand are being swiped away.

Email me to sign up. I charge a fee but will work with you if it’s too high.

This summer I will be participating in another course through Enclosure Academy @enclosedwithin with Stacie Vos of @bookcradle — part of my ongoing interest in close reading, literature, medieval thought, and the lives of women through texts, manuscripts, and historical memory.

I continue to value spaces dedicated to slower forms of inquiry and sustained engagement with ideas across time. Over the past year, these studies have deeply influenced my own thinking around research, artistic practice, atmosphere, and the relationship between text and lived experience.

BOOKWOMEN
Summer 2026

Bookwomen I:
Medieval Women “Lewd, Feeble & Frail”

Tuesdays in June
2 pm CDT
12 pm PST / 3 pm EST / 8 pm BST (UK)

This two-part summer course explores women readers, writers, owners, and makers of books during the medieval period, with an emphasis on England and English translations of texts from other languages.

Figures discussed include both literary and historical women: The Wife of Bath, Margaret Beaufort, Jane Scrope, Juliana Berners, Margery Kempe, Julian of Norwich, Margaret Paston, Hroswitha of Gandersheim, and Christine de Pizan.

Through manuscripts, excerpts, and objects from the medieval world, the course considers what it meant to be a woman reader within a culture shaped by religion, authorship, memory, and social expectation.

A course I am very much looking forward to participating in this summer.

From the protective secluded lighthouse of Woolf’s prose (presented here) to the continuous nonhierarchical circles in Vanessa Bell’s woodcuts for book jackets, we find much to feed our collective exploration in the new Enclosure Academy.

Join us for intimate and inclusive community around close, critical readings of shared texts.

We are forging lifelong connections beyond institutional, geographical, disciplinary, and chronological lines.

Real, human intelligence, diversely felt and expressed, formed in collaboration.

✨enrolling now for summer💫
