DHS is the biggest threat to our communities.

The pain and trauma they have inflicted on our children is unforgivable.

But we can choose to change course, dismantle DHS, protect our children, and reimagine the safety of our communities. by @repdeliaramirez

ICE supervisors and “well-trained” agents have perpetrated horrors, shootings, and murders in our communities.

Training and reforms won’t stop the violence because DHS AGENTS ARE NOT ROGUE.

DHS was designed to be a weapon. We must dismantle DHS and hold every perpetrator of violence accountable. by @repdeliaramirez

No one is safe when ICE is present – whether on the streets or in one of the agency’s more than 200 abuse-ridden detention facilities. People are dying in ICE detention at a record-breaking rate, ICE agents are tearing families apart and shooting people on the streets, making people less safe, and causing chaos wherever they go — whether in Austin, Minneapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Biddeford, Hagerstown or beyond.

Make no mistake, we are witnessing a watershed moment. No more abuse and death at the hands of ICE and no more ICE funding while people lose health care, struggle to pay rent and kids go hungry. We demand an end to the ICE age.

We are deeply saddened and equally enraged to hear about the death of Carlos Josue Marchena-Marchena, 36 at the hands of ICE.

Mr. Marchena died in ICE custody of alleged medical neglect, following ICE’s failure to provide the proper food and medical care he needed to manage his diabetes. The Winn Correctional Center where Marchena was detained is notorious for its abuse, neglect, and lack of oversight. Marchena is the third person to die in a Louisiana ICE facility since April, an alarming number especially considering ICE is planning to open a new detention center to detain families and children in Alexandria, LA later this month.

Severe medical neglect in ICE facilities continues to increase as ICE detention is expanding under Trump. People in detention deserve proper medical attention and specialist care — not to be caged in a deadly ICE detention center plagued with abuse and medical neglect.

There have been at least 56 deaths in ICE custody since Trump was inaugurated, at least 11 fatal shootings by ICE and CBP under the current Trump administration, several other deaths caused by ICE operations, and an unknown number of deaths of people who were in ICE custody and then died shortly after their release.

Nurul Amin Shah Alam was a Rohingya refugee living in Buffalo. He was 56 and nearly blind, and he got arrested after he got lost on a walk and wandered onto someone’s porch with the curtain rod he used as a walking stick. He spent a year in jail waiting for trial. His lawyer and the prosecutor worked out a plea to two misdemeanors that wouldn’t touch his immigration status, so he could go home. On February 19th his wife and two sons waited outside the jail to bring him home. A federal immigration detainer from a year earlier was still in his file. The sheriff’s office chose to call federal agents. Border Patrol got there before his release was even finished, confirmed there was no basis to deport him, and left him that night at a closed Tim Hortons in near-freezing cold, miles from his house. Nobody called his family. His body was found five days later. In April the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. A detainer is a form signed by an ICE officer. No judge reads it, and counties are free to say no. That’s all a sanctuary policy is. Follow @immdefense and @end_theiceage. by @repdeliaramirez

The American public is clear on this: End the ICE age. Yet, ICE is operating the largest federal law enforcement agency in the US with the largest immigrant detention system in the world due to unprecedented funding at a cost to all Americans.

People don’t want to fund immigration enforcement or detention centers in their communities at the expense of critical programs that support millions of Americans like healthcare, food assistance, and education. Our tax dollars need to be used to strengthen our families and communities, not to target, detain and deport our immigrant friends, neighbors and coworkers. Local communities know what we need, and it is not astronomical budgets for ICE and CBP. Our elected officials must redirect taxpayer dollars instead into education for our kids, housing for all income levels, and health care for everyone.

ICE kills people, tears families apart, and threatens community safety wherever they go. No one is safe when ICE is present – whether on the streets or in one of the agency’s more than 200 abuse-ridden detention facilities.

This Saturday, July 25, over 250 communities across the country will hold vigils, protests, and demonstrations to demand justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Johan Sebastian Guerrero, Jesus Manuel Arenas Silva, and many more who have been killed by ICE or died in the agency’s custody. Neighbors will gather to pay their respects, pray, mourn, and demand ICE out of communities!

No more abuse and death at the hands of ICE and no more ICE funding while people lose health care, struggle to pay rent and kids go hungry. Members of Congress must act now to shut down ICE detention centers, redirect ICE funding, and get ICE out of communities. It’s time to End the ICE age.

No one is safe when ICE is present – whether on the streets or in one of the agency’s more than 200 abuse-ridden detention facilities. People are dying in detention. The alarming death toll in ICE custody underscores that ICE’s mass detention and deportation system is plagued by egregiously poor conditions, a lack of accountability and a culture of violence and secrecy that results in system-wide abuses, including death.

No more abuse and death at the hands of ICE and no more ICE funding while people lose health care, struggle to pay rent and kids go hungry. Members of Congress must act now to shut down ICE detention centers, redirect ICE funding, and get ICE out of communities. It’s time to End the ICE age.
