The second single from Christian Li’s upcoming ‘album Broken Neon Sign’ brings vocals into the prepared piano chaos. “TV Brain” represents what he calls “a particularly organic response to the improvised and edited instrumentals.” Featuring Jackson FitzGerald on bass, JP Bouvet on drums, Michael Sachs on woodwinds, and Akhil Gopal on trumpet, the track balances Li’s piano and vocals with a rhythm section that knows how to navigate his broad conception of improvisation. Indebted to John Cage but looser—“caveman preparations” adjusted in response to what was happening musically in the room—“TV Brain” captures the sound of a haunted record taking shape. Co-produced with Michael Sachs, mixed by Zubin Hensler. From the album ‘Broken Neon Sign,’ out September 4, 2026 on Endectomorph Music. by @endectomorph

✨Neon City is out now🎷

This song began with a groove that Simon brought into rehearsal. I wrote the melody over that beat, and it gradually evoled through live shows.

To me, Neon City captures the feeling of wandering through the city at night, when everything is constantly moving but there’s still a strange sense of calm.

This is the first glimpse into my upcoming album PLAiDE, out Octobor 2.

I find it increasingly rare to be in a truly collective band as I approach my middle-tiger years. I am grateful to my fellow Slow Tigers: JP, Adam, Nathan and Andrew for seeing this album through. We lived up to our name and took our time, as collectives tend to do, but we are all very excited to share this album with you today.

Grateful to be recognized in DownBeat Magazine with more of my peers and colleagues every passing year.

I’ll take this opportunity to shout out @endectomorph as the home of my and many of my friends’ music, and I would be remiss not to thank @la__reserve for their massive ongoing support in getting our music out into the world. I’m also grateful to @lowlandsbar for the opportunity to perform my music regularly over the past five years or so and the support from @keyed__up so we can all get paid decently for our labor. Huge thanks also to @daddariowoodwinds for making amazing reeds and other products that I rely on daily whilst promoting my original work.

Since I haven’t already posted about this, I’d like to highlight that I’m releasing two albums on the same day in late September: Kevin Sun, I and Kevin Sun, II (yes, very creative titles). The music features two different quartets with contrasting but complementary sets of music, recorded in late 2024 and spring 2025. The first volume features @maxlightmaxlight @wawasonstin and @jondownload while volume two features @christianli89 Walter and @kayvon.gordon . Lovely cover photography by @xavierkim_ with design by @monkeymittens & mastering by @thekitchenmastering
