Just a little sneak peek at my latest slow stitching adventure. ✨
Most of the base stitching happened during cozy evening sessions, and now I’m diving into the final touches—sequins, wire, and an unreasonable amount of French knots.

Yes… it’s getting outta hand.
Yes… I regret nothing.

This stitch journal is officially gaining weight with all the threads, felt, and fabrics—and honestly, she wears it well. šŸ’™šŸ§µ#slowstitching #yegartist #textileartist by @engelbelle

Stitch & Gather — Day Three 🪔

Hosted by Michelle Cox Creative

Well, that escalated quickly! šŸ˜‚

I decided my granddaughter’s birthday hat needed a monogram. I didn’t have a stencil in the size I wanted, so I printed a few different-sized E’s on paper and made my own pattern. A little piece of felt, a pair of scissors, and we were off!

Then I had the bright idea that the letter needed some French knots. And, well… as you can see, I got a little carried away. 🤣

Once I start making French knots, I have a hard time stopping. One knot becomes ten, ten become fifty, and before I know it, I’m adding another layer… and another… and another!

Because More Is More, right? šŸ˜‰

I’m loving how this little birthday hat is evolving, one layer at a time. And I’m pretty sure there are more stitches still to come!

✨ Want to join in the Stitch & Gather fun? You can take part, too! Just share what you’re working on, whether it’s a big project or a tiny bit of stitching. We’d love to see what you’re making!

Use #stitchandgather so we can find your work and cheer you on.

🧵 Stitchy Gather Challenge | Day 2: The Rhythm of Stitching

Day two of the Stitchy Gather Challenge, hosted by Michelle Cox of Michelle Cox Creative, was all about blanket stitching. 🪔

I’ve been cutting out little elements from lace to add to my granddaughter’s birthday hat, and since I know this hat is going to get plenty of love (and plenty of wear!), I wanted to make sure those delicate edges were nice and secure.

So, out came the needle and thread! I chose colours that complement the lace and spent some time in the sunshine, working my way around each little piece.

There’s something so satisfying about the rhythm of a blanket stitch. Finding that steady pace, keeping the stitches nice and even, and letting your hands do their thing. It’s one of those simple pleasures of slow stitching that I never seem to tire of. šŸ’›

A little sunshine, some beautiful lace, and the quiet rhythm of hand stitching. Sometimes, that’s exactly what a creative day needs.

And all of these little stitches are adding up to something special for my granddaughter. I can’t wait to see her wearing it!

🧵 Day 1 of the Stitchy Gather Challenge! 🧵

Better Together is our theme this year, and I’m kicking things off by gathering some of my favourite fabrics from Michelle Cox Creative and layering them onto a piece of felt. Let the stitching begin!

What am I making? A big, beautiful, slow-stitched birthday hat for my granddaughter! šŸŽ‚ She specifically requested a BIG one for her birthday, so who am I to argue? šŸ˜‰

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be sharing the progress of this little project as it evolves, one layer and one stitch at a time. I have a feeling there will be plenty of colour, texture, and a little bit of creative chaos along the way.

After weeks of filming and putting the finishing touches on my More Is More slow stitching online class, it feels lovely to slow down, pick up a needle, and simply enjoy the process. The class is expected to be available at the end of October, and for now, I’m relishing this quieter creative time and stitching alongside Michelle and this wonderful community.

Because sometimes the best creative projects aren’t about teaching or learning something new. They’re simply about making something with love. ā¤ļø

Follow along and see how this birthday hat comes together!

šŸ‚ I’m the October Guest Artist for the Handmade Book Club! šŸ‚

This month I’m absolutely delighted to be collaborating with Ali Manning of Vintage Page Designs and the Handmade Book Club.

Earlier this year, I created my Sunset Painted Album—a handmade book combining sunset-inspired colour, slow stitching and lots of room for creative play. I created the lesson and three different sample albums, then sent them off to Ali.

And then… Ali worked her bookbinding magic. ✨

She created a brand-new binding for my Sunset Album, and it’s become the October project for the Handmade Book Club!

Now everyone in the club is busy painting their sunsets, stitching, experimenting and making their own version of the book. I absolutely cannot wait to see what comes out of it. There’s something pretty special about creating a project and then watching other artists take it somewhere completely unexpected.

I’ve been a member of the Handmade Book Club for about five years now, and I can honestly say I’m a much wiser—and much more inspired—bookmaker because of this community.

The club is packed with:
šŸ“– Handmade book projects
āœ‚ļø Bookbinding inspiration
šŸŽØ Guest artists
šŸ’» Online events and workshops
✨ A wonderful creative community

If handmade books, bookbinding, artist books or creative mixed media are calling your name, the Handmade Book Club is definitely worth a peek.

And if you join, you’ll find my Sunset Painted Album lesson waiting for you as the October guest artist project. šŸŒ…

I’m so excited to see all those sunsets come to life!

For the last two months, I’ve been completely consumed by creating my More Is More online stitching class.

And let me tell you… getting all that glorious chaos onto camera has been a bit of an adventure. šŸ˜‚

Some of my projects have a lot of layers — fabric, thread, beads, embellishments and more thread. And apparently, my camera wasn’t quite as excited about all those layers as I was. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

This is one of the projects that just didn’t quite work out as a class video. The details in the piece are lovely, but I wasn’t able to capture all those delicious layers clearly enough on film.

Looking back, I think adding the little bow was the perfect finishing touch — a tiny ribbon to symbolize the death of this particular project as a class video. šŸŽ€āš°ļøšŸ˜‚

Oh well. Not every creative experiment makes it to the finish line!

The good news? I have plenty of other fantastic projects, lessons and stitching adventures that did make the cut.

More Is More is all about embracing layers, texture, colour, embellishment and the beautiful freedom of chaos embroidery. It’s slow stitching with a little more… well… MORE.

I’m hoping to have the class ready by the end of November. šŸŽ‰

I’ve just spent the most wonderful few days immersed in printmaking with Meagan MacDonald, and my creative brain is FULL. 🤩

We made prints on Japanese papers using R&F encaustic wax, and the transparency and vibrancy that can be achieved is nothing short of magical.

This is one of my creations — a scroll on delicate rice paper, with marks made using bamboo and pine tree branches. 🌲

And now I’m faced with a very serious artist dilemma…

Do I leave it exactly as it is because it’s already pretty darn stunning?

Or do I spend the winter adding more marks, layers and little bits of creative mischief?

You know which option my ā€œmore is moreā€ brain is leaning toward. šŸ˜‚

I’m so excited to see where this piece goes — although I suspect it may spend a little time resting while I let my subconscious figure out the next step.

A huge thank you to R&F for sponsoring this wonderful event, and to Meagan for yet another creative adventure. I always come home with new ideas, new techniques and a head full of possibilities.

Now… to add or not to add? šŸ¤”

Sometimes I wonder where someone else’s inspiration ends and where mine begins.

And then I think… maybe that’s not really the point.

We’re all a bit of a creative mishmash—made up of the things we’ve seen, the techniques we’ve learned, the artists who have inspired us, the classes we’ve taken, and all the experimenting we’ve done along the way.

This journal cover is a perfect example.

It started with a painted piece of canvas from a Flower Magic Art Fest lesson with @franciscanunes_heartmakes . I’d done weaving before, but then I learned a new way of weaving and combining it with slow stitching through @debasreedeyart Making Zen classes.

Then the woven piece wasn’t quite big enough for anything. So naturally… I added a frill. šŸ˜‚ A few more bits. A little more stitching. And eventually, with everything I’ve learned from years of making handmade books, it became a journal cover.

A complete creative mashup.

And honestly? I love that.

The stitched words say ā€œBe curious, not judgmental.ā€ And that feels like a pretty good motto for my creative life.

Keep learning. Keep experimenting. Stay curious. Borrow an idea, twist it, make it your own, and see where it takes you.

This little journal is filled with my own eco-printed fabrics and dyed papers, so it’s not just a handmade journal—it’s a little record of all the places my creativity has wandered.

I’m never quite sure where I’m going next.

But I’m very curious to find out. šŸ’›

Just faffing around with wax today. šŸ˜

A little encaustic medium + stencils + a big, bold yellow and suddenly things are getting interesting.

I’ve been out in my garden studio for FOUR HOURS.

And, of course, it was the last thing I did that turned out to be the coolest.

Because apparently my creative mojo likes to make me work for it. šŸ™„

Maybe I just needed four hours of faffing, fiddling, layering, scraping and generally wondering what the heck I was doing before my brain finally decided to show up.

And then… BAM.

There it is. ✨

That little spark where everything suddenly clicks and you think, ā€œOhhhh… NOW we’re having fun.ā€

Tell me I’m not the only one.

Does your creative mojo sometimes need a ridiculously long warm-up before it decides to clock in?

Or are you one of those annoyingly efficient people who can just sit down and make art? šŸ˜‚

ā€œWhen Kerry’s Alcohol Ink Flower Garden tutorial showed up in my Facebook feed, I knew it was finally time to try the Ranger alcohol ink that had been in a drawer for 10 years!

Kerry walks us through each project in real time, explaining each step as she goes.

I wasn’t sure I would be good at this, but Kerry’s instructions were easy to follow and a pleasure to listen to. Now I can’t stop!ā€ Jeanne Maher, North Carolina.
