“How strange for a person to look at something as nondescript as me and decide I’m “her.” ... My brand of dysphoria is the distorted reality of it all. It is being a shapeshifter with no original form...”
 - Thokozani Mbwana, An absence of

engenderedlitmag.com/autumn2025 “...I feel that the human body as it exists in the world right now does not exist at all to and for me. I seldom register my own existence through my physical appearance because most times when I look in the mirror the body is that of a mannequin and my face is one that has no features at all. And not in a devastating way. In a way that matter-of-factly states that that is what this body is to me. An unmarked vessel. My face, a blank canvas.

To ascribe something like gender to a mannequin without a face, one I live in every day does not make sense to me. How strange for a person to look at something as nondescript as me and decide I’m “her.” Sorry, I’m just some (agender) guy, and barely even that. My brand of dysphoria is the distorted reality of it all. It is being a shapeshifter with no original form...”

"Batman is compulsion and neuroses, kink and fetish. Batman is spandex and impact. Wham! Pow! Thud!"

 - Kimberly Renifler, Survive the Night: Batman the Pervert

engenderedlitmag.com/autumn2025 I don’t want to be Batman. I want to conquer him. I want to fuck him.

This is because Batman is a pervert. At his core. He lives underground. He is constantly spending money on gadgets and costumes to support his rough trade. He keeps young men and trains them. He trusts only his butler, the problematic older man from his childhood. Batman isn’t just a man. He is a monster. He is an appetite.

Batman’s limitless resources mean he has every reason not to be Batman but is anyway. Batman is compulsion and neuroses, kink and fetish. Batman is spandex and impact. Wham! Pow! Thud!

they're gonna keep making us fight for it, so this issue we're asking: fact, fantasy, or fiction, what expressions of gender make you feel fierce?

"a little more tied to this flesh-mass-thing, a little less static and, dare I say, ecstatic?... It reminds me of being fourteen, doodling wishes into my skin."

engenderedlitmag.com/autumn2025 Tattoos = Gender ?
Alex Cregan

In the end, its all needles and process. An ink cartridge or an elixir are interchangeable, someone’s mother is still screaming “irreversible-!” anyway. I still leave changed, a little more tied to this flesh-mass-thing, a little less static and, dare I say, ecstatic? Regardless, those who love us will gush over our new chitin, asking about the growing exoskeleton. It reminds me of being fourteen, doodling wishes into my skin. I dreamed that when they’d seep into my bloodstream they’d become reality, as if it was that easy. In the end, we are all eternally morphing, chameleons shedding skins we’ve long outgrown and still we are shifting.

In the end, its all
needles and process. The pain
is secondary. by @engenderedlit

the spent fireworks of liberation
have segued into dimming lights
in mental prisons-
– Gary Indiana, ‘Light and Death’,
February 18 1986

gush of sunlight. marble-quiet, like specially washed underwear, birdsong-fingered. femme stunk venetian, new freezer, a feral softness coagulating in lambeth graveyards, giorgione stroking the coquettish fragility of the revenge of the teenage perverts. the crickets cuddled. chalk-hushed, like boxers starched girlish, siren-caressed. seagull’s polishing sausage offshore, you should get out more, a growling mildness vinegaring the eagle-hickeyed shisha coals of the A30, titian dredging the framed youth from a barren english-channel mattress. a surgical summer. clay-brick-cool, like knickers without an opening, bottle-bank-clutched. susie blooms solitary, let me see you push a T, an out-of-joint jealousy buds through peckham’s dusk-sodden mirrors, tintoretto fondling the balkanisation of memory like butterflies soaring from a kitten’s yearning mouth. i watch the washing lines for new clothes to inhabit. by @engenderedlit
