Transgender Day of Rememberance is a weird one. Today, I offer two poems about gender I had published in the latest @engenderedlit alongside my good friend @joae.10 (who's work is also stunning)

One is more of a prayer, the other is a haibun.

I don't have the articulate words to communicate how this day makes me feel, beyond wishing every other trans person is gifted one thing: rest A heavily textured painting consisting of layers of colour, first daubed or smeared, and then speckled. Dominant are red, orange, yellow, light blue, and medium blue though purple, green, and pink also make an appearance.

🤍 i had the privilege to be a part of @engenderedlit 's latest issue, freshly launched yesterday ! what an honour it is to share this issue with so many incredibly talented writers, and again with my dear friend alex ( @flo.raldisaster , check out his piece !! ). will it happen a third time ? who knows ! but truly, thank you to all who have believed in me and my craft, those who have urged me forward to putting myself out there. you're all wonderful. you all know who you are. i love you all dearly.

the poem itself is 'pen name'. to deconstruct it juuuust a little, this poem was written with the sole purpose of parsing through previously unexplored territory. i had never before faced the person who i had puppeteered for most of my life and who continues to be the standard that society holds me to through a narrow lens ,,, until now. facing that person was something that made me realise just how wholly undone i am, and how much of me is yet to be found.

i wove into this poem a separate piece i had done months prior called 'parasite', and it was the very thing that brought this poem to its completion. in a way, being trans is the feeling of being parasitic. it is feeling some deep-rooted ache and realising just how bound together you are by the threads of what others want you to be. unravelling that is what sets you free. building yourself up bit by bit, stitch by stitch, until you are what YOU want to be. but all of it takes time.

all in all, it is the love i hold for the person i could have been, had it all worked out differently. a love letter to the me that makes her, and the her that makes me. where is it that we connect? where do we collide? perhaps in time, i will find that for myself. maybe next time. maybe in another deconstructed dive 🌻

this poem isn’t innocent or naive or anything like that, but i think there’s an hope (and even expectation) of a future lightness and openness. the title and italicised sections are as much about establishing a relationship with their respective time periods as their content - and because of its age, the third-person reference to myself was originally imagining a possible figure instead of someone who materially exists. i remember finishing it on the day ‘not like us’ came out. thank you to @engenderedlit .

I have new poems out in en*gendered! I wrote these poems after a crisis: one which was in most ways very ordinary and in some ways frankly bizarre. These poems ask: what would a dissected nervous system feel? Is a handful of dust human? Is a crumbling clump of wood a man? Maybe they're about returning to personhood, and my relationship with masculinity as a cis man.

Thank you so much to en*gendered, and their editor wim, for putting this issue together. Please check out the beautiful, angry voices in this issue. Please listen to trans voices right now, in the middle of a political reality which tries to silence and devalue them 🏳️‍⚧️

Can't really believe that my poem "Underbelly" will be in the Summer 2025 issue of @engenderedlit among the work of so many talented artists.

(I also can't believe this cover by @misprdlina. Absolutely incredible!)

On her twelfth birthday, her Papa bought her a little camouflage neckerchief, thought it cute, a girly girl dressed a boy, and she played along, always anything to please that pop, all through high school and later, and she joked for years ever since, in and out of deer, duck, and turkey season: “My favorite color.” Closet full, some come to see. - by R. P. Singletary, “CAMOU counts (OR, parental expectations embodied)” thx @engenderedlit

Back in 2022, @engenderedlit put out a call for how cis men engage with their gender, and it happened that I was in the process of thinking about my relationship to my gender and masculinity as a cis man. In particular, I am perpetually inspired by how much more deliberately and intentionally my trans, nonbinary, and other lgbtq friends have thought about their self identities. I decided to answer the call with a poem I had been working on about what being a man means to me. It was one of my first ever poems accepted for publication, and remains very important to me. Given the current political climate, I just want to reiterate part of the spirit of the poem, which is the tremendous admiration I have for trans folks, and their hard won assertion of self.

Link in bio for the full poem. Screenshot reads:

Being a Man, Draft Ш
My gender, I think sometimes, is just shoulders; how I feel My body from the shoulders inward. How I have to scrunch
Them in in public seating. A bull in a china shop, my gender Is an obligation of restraint, responsibility not to trample
Others. But maybe I should start with Caesar, Gaius Iulius, I mean, and reading the Bello Gallico at fourteen. Cisalpine

I wrote this poem during Endometriosis Awareness Month, shortly after one of several hate cr!mes I experienced this past year.

This week is trans and nonbinary awareness week. It is not easy being visibly trans, but it’s also the most beautiful and freeing things I have ever experienced. While I am fearful of the kinds of things I experienced this past year, I also know I hold a lot of privilege as a thin, white trans person.

There’s a lot I could say about being trans. There’s a lot I probably should say. But honestly? This past year has been EXHAUSTING for trans people. So I am simply here, taking up space, living authentically and fully and happily. I want all trans people to have a safe space to call home, a place they can be themselves without fear. Currently, there aren’t many places that are completely safe for trans people. But there is so much love in this community. I know we will have safe places.

Trans people have always existed. We WILL always exist. You can ☠️ every one of us, but more of us will be born every day. We’re not going anywhere.

Today I choose to take up space and use my privileges to hopefully make it a tiny bit safer for all trans people.

I am transmasculine, my pronouns are they/he, and I love you

PS this corner of the internet will always be safe for you. I don’t allow any transphobic rhetoric to proliferate in my comments, and TERFs will swiftly be blocked.
