Scientists named a new genus of rove beetle after Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece.

There are two species described, Luffy nika from northern Laos and Luffy schillhammeri from Yunnan, China.

The authors attribute the etymology to the genus's elongated mandibles, antennae and maxillary palps referencing Luffy's stretching abilities, and Luffy nika in reference to the rove beetles pale hairs looking like Luffy's gear 5 form.

Sci-fi birthed the xenomorph, but nature gave rise to their biology!

Parasitoid insects develop in or on other animals and eventually kill their host. There are common fly and wasp parasitoids everywhere you look! They use an ovipositor to inject eggs into their host, and some species can even alter host behaviour after they emerge.

In March 2026, authorities arrested Zhang Kequn at Nairobi’s international airport with 2,238 live ants.

Illegal transport of these ants can create conservation and biosecurity risks! There's an easy way to combat it if you want to raise ants though...native species! They're cheap and easy to find!

House centipedes (Scutigera coleoptrata) are fast indoor predators that feed on other arthropods, including household pest species.

Their bites are weak and unknown to peirce human skin. If you would rather not have one indoors, trap it under a cup, slide paper underneath and release it outside!
