What does Science Communication look like? 🐜📸👩🏻‍💻👩‍🚀 Is it your Grade 9 science teacher teaching you about the laws of equal applied force by laying on a bed of nails? (Thanks Mr. Mandrake!) 🕴What we normally think of science communication though is in the realm outside of academic institutions, and while there are people like myself that call themselves science communicators, in a sense every single one of us is a science communicator. Since science is the understanding of how the universe works, we all communicate with each other our shared knowledge of how things work whether it's understanding how to say “tarsier”, or understanding why banana peels are slippery. 🍌

If science is just understanding, then each of us, is a beholder to some of that understanding. So the rest is just communication. What are the qualities that make you want to talk to someone, to learn from someone? They are the same qualities that make you want to share something that you know with them. It's curiosity, empathy, wonder, and most of all love. These are the foundations that our society should be built on, so it's really up to all of us to evoke those senses in our everyday life. 🖖

This understanding of communicating shifts with technologies, but whether we're communicating with the written word, on a podcast, on a video, or in person, we understand that the love we have for our subject is equal to the love we have to tell you about it. ❤️ This past week I went to Banff for the Beakerhead Science Communication Program, and while I learned a lot of the skills that are needed, the real lessons came from the understanding of human connection in our communication. Emotions are always better than facts, and we know that deep down a lot of us are feeling hopeless, dejected, depressed at the direction this planet is going, but we can change things and we will together. 🌎

If you look at these photos, this what sci-comm looks like to me. What does it look like to you? Comment below👇

“I solemnly swear not to bore myself or others with the greatest adventure that ever existed... science!” 🎉😂
.
That pledge was our last of many incredible group activities at the 9-day #BanffScicomm program. It pretty much encapsulates the ethos of the program: let’s stop making science boring when it isn’t! ✨ Tell stories, be you, have fun, and respect your audience’s knowledge & time!
.
It was an honour to get to join the family of faculty at the program to coach the participants on crafting fun visual science stories. But it was a great learning experience for me as well.
.
Quite a few people have been subtlety (and also pointedly) insulting & patronizing about the way many of us approach sharing science. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I generally have an IDGAF kinda attitude, and lots of fabulous support from you folks 💕 but over time I’ve noticed it’s made me a little more self conscious about what I share.
.
[[If you’ve ever felt the same at any point, pls know it’s not just you - one person against an entire rude system of people stuck in their old ways is a tough battle that’s bound to wear us down now and then.]]
.
But spending over a week in the mountains with a group that was ready to be honest, vulnerable and SUPER WEIRD was really liberating. ⏭ Swipe through for some of our most extra and silly moments (there were a lot more I didn’t catch on camera).
.
The past few months post-PhD have been a whirlwind of fun & travel, but as I strap back into work mode I’m keeping the energy from this program (and #ScienceIsADrag!) close to heart.
.
I’ve been cooking up some fun ideas for how to share science in new ways, and am excited to finally have time and energy to execute! So stay tuuuuned and lemme know what you wanna see more of!
.
