“I will show you a clip that is a couple of seconds long,” I said to @giuliamttr, @nathan.odm, and @leoniecarb, first via message, and then again in person. “And I want you to know that this is a postcard you all received this morning. It has a moving image on it. Now you are here, gathered after a long time, and you begin your hanging-out time by discussing this strange object that arrived in your mailbox. Action!”

Three long-distance best friends, ten minutes of a single-take recording, and a one-year-long process of lengthening this orphan film segment (which somehow still hasn’t ended) - and I am crazy excited to present this piece of work, which, in its own abstract way, engages with subjects very dear to me and to my filmmaking practice: magical encounters, collective spectatorship, the material image as an object, and archival imagination and speculation.

My first thank-you goes to @labocine for including A Game of Chess in their January 2026 issue on “Archives,” which allowed me to rework the editing and officially put it out there in the open.

My second heartfelt thank-you goes to @creationsenurgence, @familyfilmproject, and @hereandelsewherefest for being the first places to hold and present my first ever student film. I couldn’t have dreamt of better spaces for A Game of Chess to find its way to more people.

The rest of the thank-yous go to every single person involved in the making of A Game of Chess. There is no ‘ethnographic’ film without a community, and this is only the first step toward building something that will hopefully last (or not - what is the point of holding on if we are not prepared to let go eventually?). My heart is bursting with happiness right here and now, and I guess that is what matters. 💌🧿 by @enxhinoni
