I finally got the chance to stop by @dreamland.books.yarn in Seward AK and meet the delightful owner Micheley Kowalski. What a wonderful shop! Of course I couldn’t leave without an armload of books. Rori and I spent a marvelous week @campdenali as a part of their speaker series where they invite scientists, writers and artists to share their stories with guests and staff in the evenings. We lucked out with the weather and wildlife sightings - we saw several moose, lots of grizzly bears, caribou, golden eagles, ptarmigan, ground squirrels and Rori even got to watch a black wolf hunting a caribou. Thanks to Camp Denali’s owners Jenna and Simon, the amazing staff and all the wonderful guests - we had such a great time with you all!

There’s no place like Alaska in the summertime!
* bull moose by our vegetable garden
* raindrops on wild ferns
* arctic rose with Pioneer Peak in the distance
* wood frog in the broccoli patch (wood frogs are the only amphibian in our part of Alaska, and one of the most adorable creatures ever)
* nest the robins built in deer antlers on our shed (the youngsters had already fledged)
* waterfall flowing into the Copper River
* bald eagle waiting for us to clean our salmon
* Rori home from college to help dipnet
* bringing home fish
* with Rori and Sam after fishing all day with friends

Huge congratulations to @ajanefountas on the publication of her beautiful novel ANOTHER KIND of SYMMETRY. I was fortunate enough to be the judge for @permafrostmagazine fiction prize. There were so many terrific submissions, but this novel really stood out, and it has stayed with me. Here’s what I had to say: “A beautifully written, heartfelt story of twin sisters torn in different directions. This transporting and atmospheric novel asks an important question- how do we maintain our deep ties with family and history while also carving out new lives for ourselves? It was an Emaleen kind of day in Chickaloon Alaska today. As I walked through the woods behind our house and saw all the wildflowers blooming, as I drove along the highway and passed the old lodge, I couldn’t help but think of her. She’s the little girl in my novel Black Woods Blue Sky (aka Une histoire d’ours). Some characters stay with me long after the book is done, maybe because they taught me a new way to see the world or because they were always a part of me. Working on this story, I was able to revisit my childhood, the wonder but also the fear, the imaginary and the real. It’s almost as if I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it’s all going to be okay, and someday you’ll write a book about it. taken in Chickaloon, Alaska by @eowyn.ivey

The sun came out in Seldovia and so did all the lovely readers - what an amazing visit! Thanks to Cindy Mom with Seldovia Public Library for bringing us to town, welcoming us so warmly, and sending us home with halibut, kelp pickles and so much more. Thanks to artist @valisahigman for the tremendous hospitality — she let us stay at her family cabin, lent us her rowboat, and shared her love of this place. (We couldn’t leave without some her gorgeous artwork.) Thanks to everyone in Seldovia, longtime residents and visitors alike, who came out to the library and Schooner Beach. Sam and I so enjoyed our time with you all!! And a special thanks to Cindy Mom for putting on her @seldovianaturetours hat and sharing so much of the area’s natural and human history with us - she is a joy to learn from.
