When the lights go off, the ecosystem keeps working.

At ADA Gallery South Africa, oxygenation is an important part of our aquarium routine, following the same approach as ADA Japan.

When the lights switch off and CO₂ injection stops, photosynthesis comes to an end. However, plants, fish and beneficial bacteria continue to respire, consuming oxygen throughout the night.

This is why we introduce additional aeration after the photoperiod.

Through increased surface agitation and water movement, we encourage gas exchange, allowing oxygen to dissolve into the water while excess CO₂ escapes. This helps maintain stable dissolved oxygen levels and supports the biological processes essential to a healthy Nature Aquarium.

Oxygen is particularly important for beneficial bacteria in our filtration systems, which rely on an adequate oxygen supply to break down ammonia and nitrite and maintain water quality.

By managing oxygenation during the night, we support:

Dissolved oxygen: Replenishing oxygen consumed by plants, fish and microorganisms.

Biological filtration: Supporting the aerobic bacteria responsible for processing nitrogenous waste.

Gas exchange: Promoting oxygen absorption and the release of excess CO₂.

Ecosystem stability: Helping maintain a balanced aquatic environment around the clock.

It's not just about what we see during the day. It's also about maintaining the conditions that keep the ecosystem thriving when the lights go out.

The Nature Aquarium never sleeps.
