Between These Black Waters is an interactive film set within a procedurally generated world. You are a null entity navigating a landscape of deteriorated code, searching for memory you cannot locate. Neither you nor the world system are visible to one another, but the tension between creates a terrain that shifts in the wake of your choices — tightening around compliance or opening, briefly, toward something else. The work asks: What does agency look like for what the system has already designated as absence? And what is possible when that system finally encounters what it was never designed to see?

Multiple paths, multiple possibilities. Experience the work, follow it to your outcome, and collect the ending you reach.

Open Editions of each ending available for .011 ETH

“…a many-faceted structure in which each brief text is close to the others in a series that does not imply logical sequence or a hierarchy, but a network in which one can follow multiple routes and draw multiple, ramified conclusions.”

— Italo Calvino, Exactitude [Six Memos for the Next Millennium]
______

@conniebakshi’s Between These Black Waters reconsiders established taxonomies of lived experience. Each choice accumulates, shaping what comes next and reframing what came before. Across repeat plays, past, present, and future collapse into one another: what was ending becomes origin, what was unknown becomes terrain already traversed. This is the temporal condition of those for whom history never became past, for whom the future arrives already shaped by what was never chosen, memory present but not retrievable. The work does not resolve this condition but ramifies it, arriving at one of multiple endings, each inhabiting the condition differently. From within that inheritance, it opens toward possibilities the system never determined.

Each one of the multiple endings of Between These Black Waters is now available to own at the completion of your journey. How will you move through this world?

Between These Black Waters by Connie Bakshi @conniebakshi is on view at EPOCH, now extended through October 31!

⸻

The world of Between These Black Waters was built on a premise: that even digital archives bear traces of the material histories they were built to exclude. That colonial experience, compressed into the instability of AI processes, remains present just below the threshold of legible data.

Generative processes were employed to capture instability within AI deliberation rather than produce fixed images. The temporality of the “black water” prompt was expanded through AI in-painting, out-painting, and video generation, revealing fractures, eroding geometries, unfinished terrain, and perpetual distortion that echo the landscape of postcolonial memory.

Enter the work, follow it to your outcome, and collect the ending you reach.

Open editions of each ending are available for 0.011 ETH. Experience it now and again at EPOCH.gallery by @epoch.gallery

EPOCH is happy to announce that all 4 editions of @conniebakshi’s Between These Black Waters are sold out.

Our deepest gratitude to DG, @jeannievu and @jehanchu, @digitalcoleman, and @scodenkirk for collecting this extraordinary work, and for their continued support of artists working across experimental, digital, and time-based forms.

Each collector will receive an artist-produced physical artifact (📷 above), including an archival USB containing the standalone applications, web archive, and Certificate of Authenticity.

Connie’s work carries a rare emotional and visual depth, moving through memory, landscape, technology, and inheritance with extraordinary sensitivity. We are honored to have supported Between These Black Waters and grateful to see it placed with such thoughtful collectors.

Congratulations, Connie. 🖤 by @epoch.gallery

The machine has bones, its own genetic inheritance. But what does it mean to move and live beyond inherited conditions?

There are things that exceed the logic of computation by nature. Not because they're hidden or absent, but because they won't resolve into the fixed states a system needs to process them.

Computation works on snapshots. It captures a value at a moment: this is what an object is, this is its classification, this is what it's worth. What computation can’t hold is a state of continuous becoming. Something that is always already different from its last recorded state.

Movement isn’t resistance in the sense of pushing back against the apparatus. It’s something harder to counter than resistance. Generating form faster than the system can classify. In a world increasingly authored by systemic dictates, movement becomes not strategy — but a condition of survival.

Visited the new LACMA and felt a kind of reverse déjà vu.

In 2023, EPOCH presented CATALYST, a virtual exhibition featuring artworks by seven artists inside a speculative 3D model of the yet-to-be-built David Geffen Galleries. Experiencing the building in person now, and matching these views back to the exhibition, brought the physical and virtual spaces into an eerie, uncanny dialogue.

CATALYST featured artworks by @tanyaaguiniga @carlagannis @truleehall @auriea.harvey.studio @khoshooee @carolinesinders @miss__sammie
