Between These Black Waters is an interactive film set within a procedurally generated world. You are a null entity navigating a landscape of deteriorated code, searching for memory you cannot locate. Neither you nor the world system are visible to one another, but the tension between creates a terrain that shifts in the wake of your choices — tightening around compliance or opening, briefly, toward something else. The work asks: What does agency look like for what the system has already designated as absence? And what is possible when that system finally encounters what it was never designed to see?

Multiple paths, multiple possibilities. Experience the work, follow it to your outcome, and collect the ending you reach.

Open Editions of each ending available for .011 ETH

Still and moving images from my Material book presentation @movingimagenyc with @reg_ha. Thanks to all who came <3

The presentation coincided with the premiere of my new choreographic work Memoir, the final poem of my book.

From the curatorial text:
Memoir belongs to a series of works Ana María Caballero calls lit·er·al li·tto·ral, in which she translates her poems into choreographed movement that reveals the intricate relationship between body language and the spoken word.

The work takes its title and spoken word from the final poem in Caballero’s collection Material. On display are only two of several components through which Memoir takes form, each translating the same body of language through a different mode of encounter.

The video brings together two parallel sequences—one in which the choreography “does” and another in which it “undoes”—to explore through movement the tension between the said and the unsaid. Their superimposition places forward and reverse movement on the screen simultaneously.

As gestures drawn from everyday life recur, subtle variations in rhythm and effort accumulate across their enactments. Through this process, return becomes a form of transformation, with self emerging, marked by its passage.

The machine has bones, its own genetic inheritance. But what does it mean to move and live beyond inherited conditions?

There are things that exceed the logic of computation by nature. Not because they're hidden or absent, but because they won't resolve into the fixed states a system needs to process them.

Computation works on snapshots. It captures a value at a moment: this is what an object is, this is its classification, this is what it's worth. What computation can’t hold is a state of continuous becoming. Something that is always already different from its last recorded state.

Movement isn’t resistance in the sense of pushing back against the apparatus. It’s something harder to counter than resistance. Generating form faster than the system can classify. In a world increasingly authored by systemic dictates, movement becomes not strategy — but a condition of survival.

An instrument built from one voice. Every choice you make bends the pitch, shifts the texture, accumulates. By the time you reach an ending you’ve been composing a score you didn’t know you were writing.

Grateful for this beautiful, thoughtful review from @curatorial_office @magazine_refresh.art, of my solo exhibition 'Between These Black Waters' currently on view @epoch.gallery. Link in bio for full review.

Excerpts:

"...carries the specific gravity of a piece that could only exist at this moment."

"For Bakshi, this is not geopolitics observed from a distance. It is inherited. The Black Water Ditch was the passage through which that history moved, and drowned, and kept moving. Bakshi does not use Taiwan as backdrop or symbol. She uses it as substrate: the material the machine is made of, the ground the system stands on without knowing it stands on anything at all."

"A debut that announces a practice to follow closely."

'Between These Black Waters' is a web-based interactive ("choose-your-own-adventure") film, now playable/viewable online at EPOCH (link in bio).

Still swooning over an opening night for the books.

@catalyst_la_ is the community, the tribe I’ve called home from the beginning — the friendships I found and forged here have weathered sun and storm, bear and bull. All the more fitting that my solo exhibition with @epoch.gallery, ‘Between These Black Waters’, was shared and celebrated here amongst those I hold most dear.

All of my gratitude to @cody_edison @doctor_wu and @prometheanwatch — the gorgeous souls without whom this gorgeous evening wouldn’t be possible, and who believed in this impossible project from its earliest seed.

And to @fwb.help and @0xassembly for the generous support.

My heart is yours 🖤

Between These Black Waters: Connie Bakshi at EPOCH Gallery

Review in refresh.art

A sumptuous, terribly timely piece. Connie Bakshi puts choice back where it belongs: as consequence. Poetic, sharp, and quietly forward. A next step. One of the most urgent works of digital art you will encounter this year.

Some works stop you. Not because they are loud, not because they perform their own importance, but because something in them is genuinely at stake. "Between These Black Waters" is one of those works. Connie Bakshi's first solo exhibition at EPOCH Gallery carries the specific gravity of a piece that could only have been at this moment, from this particular intersection of histories. Its beauty is inseparable from what it knows. Then you understand you are not looking at craft. You are looking at truth. That is the difference between a good work and a masterpiece.

This is beauty as truth. Connie Bakshi work is a 21st century masterpiece.

In anticipation of Connie Bakshi’s solo exhibition with @epoch.gallery, we are delighted to announce an upcoming conversation between Connie Bakshi and Nora N. Khan.

Between These Black Waters is a web-based interactive film set inside a procedurally generated world. The work follows an unknown entity awakening without memory, navigating a series of choices toward multiple possible endings.

Connie Bakshi (@conniebakshi) is a Taiwanese-American artist working at the intersection of ancestral knowing and machine intelligence — questioning what becomes legible when dominant codes break down.

Nora N. Khan (@prometheanwatch) is an independent critic, essayist, curator, editor, and educator. She is internationally recognized for her essays and short books, marked by a hybrid, genre-defiant prose style. Formally, this work attempts to both theorize the limits of algorithmic knowledge and outline the future of creative production in a technocratic age.

Our programs are generously supported by @0xassembly and @fwb.help and are hosted by the historic and beloved @elcidsunset. This program is presented in collaboration with EPOCH. See you next week.
