🚨BAD BILL ALERT🚨The GOP-controlled House Ways & Means Committee is marking up a bill that would exempt religious nonprofits from longstanding requirements for 501(c)(3) organizations in order to empower them to discriminate. Here's what you need to know about H.R. 9722:Tax-exempt institutions must serve a public purpose & not be contrary to established public policy. Applying this, the IRS revoked a university’s tax-exempt status because it was discriminating against interracial couples. This bill seeks to undo that—and more.This bill creates a different standard for tax-exempt status when it comes to religious orgs’ practices that relate to marriage, sexuality, and gender identity by carving out those practices from the law’s requirement that practices can’t contradict public policy.SCOTUS has already made it clear that racial discrimination is contrary to public policy & the IRS can revoke tax-exempt status if an organization were engaging in race discrimination. Republicans want to overturn that—and open the door to more discrimination. Freedom of religion is a fundamental American value and there are already religious exemptions provided by both federal nondiscrimination laws and, when appropriate, the Constitution. We should not create a new carve-out that prioritizes only certain religious practices. by @equalitycaucus

🚨BAD BILLS ALERT🚨Republicans on the House Education Committee are marking up two anti-equality bills, including one to undermine Title IX’s protections for LGBTQ+ students.Here's what you need to know: BILL 1: HR 8781 would re-define sex in Title IX to refer to “an individual’s biologically determined sex.”The bill sponsor said his intent is to prevent future Presidents from enforcing Title IX to prohibit sexual orientation & gender identity discrimination.BILL 1: H.R. 8781’s redefining of “sex” would undermine Title IX’s protections on the basis of sexual orientation & gender identity—and also its protections for all students from sexual harassment and sex stereotyping discrimination.BILL 2: HR 4986 would add a burdensome opt-in requirement for certain school surveys. Current law ALREADY requires schools to let parents opt-out of these surveys, but the bill sponsor wants to make this change to undermine LGBTQ+ data collection & mental health screenings.BILL 2: This bill will increase burdens on parents and schools without making any significant change in parents’ rights. Parents already have the power to weigh in—this is just more paperwork and follow up for parents and students.We urge the committee to reject these bills. by @equalitycaucus
