Should young athletes have to choose between sport and education?

At our 7th Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series on the topic ‘Designing Schools for Athletes - Rethinking Education for the Modern Student Athlete’, we brought together perspectives on this challenge that most young athletes and their families navigate every day - balancing the demands of training and competition with school, attendance and exams.

Shri Kunal, IAS, Joint Secretary, Department of Sports, Government of India, @kunal.one who was unable to join us in person due to an unexpected travel commitment, graciously shared his thoughts through a video address.

He spoke about the government’s intent to make sport an integral part of education, highlighting Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 and its vision for a flexible system that well accommodates training and competition schedules of young athletes along with education. He urged parents to take sport as seriously as education, pointing to the growing opportunities, career pathways in the sports sector and lifelong health benefits.

The policy intent is an important step forward. The opportunity now is to build on this vision and ensure that it translates into consistent, practical support for young athletes in their everyday lives at school.

It truly takes a village to Raise an Athlete.

It was so heart-warming to bring this village together at the first edition of our Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series at the India Habitat Centre earlier this month.

For the first 10, maybe even 15 years, almost every meaningful decision in an athlete’s life runs through their parents. The encouragement to start, the choice of sport, when to push, when to hold back, accelerating at the right points, braking where it’s necessary - so much of this comes from parents.

For those athletes who go on to play competitively, until they enter elite programmes or structured high-performance environments, it is their parents trying to create their own version of it in their early years. Sports parenting is a tightrope that most parents walk without a map.

That’s really where Raising An Athlete begins, from the idea that maybe this journey doesn’t have to be figured out alone. Support should start not only when medals are at stake, but when the mindsets are being shaped. Not when the athletes have already made it, but when they need that spotlight, that backing, and that belief the most.

It’s not about celebrating a few exceptional journeys. It’s about opening them up, so the learnings, the mistakes, the turning points don’t stay with a handful of families.

Raising An Athlete - the podcast and now our physical Talk Series at the India Habitat Centre by equalsportz is a step to build this community of young athletes and sports parents, together with coaches and other sporting experts, coming together, listening, learning, and finding the answers together.

So if you are a curious parent, a young athlete, a sports expert, or a sports fan, do join us!

The next edition of the talk series promises an exciting conversation on the mental game. Topic: Killer Instinct: The Winning Mindset Our Athletes Need

Thousands of children begin their sporting journey with talent and big dreams. But what determines who makes it to the top? And what happens to the many who don’t?

Is it talent, mindset, coaching, opportunity, family support or something far more complex?

We’re delighted to have Deepthi Bopaiah, @deepthibopaiah, former CEO of GoSports Foundation and Founder & CEO of Ripple Effects, join us for this edition of the Raising An Athlete Talk Series.

During her 13-year tenure as CEO of GoSports Foundation (2012–2025), Deepthi helped shape the careers of 70 Olympians and Paralympians and built one of India’s most respected high-performance support ecosystems. She continues to serve on the GoSports board.

With nearly two decades of experience at the intersection of sport, social impact and cause-driven communication, Deepthi brings a unique perspective on the people, programmes, institutions and support systems that help transform sporting potential into elite performance.

She will bring an important ecosystem perspective to our conversation about the journey from junior promise to senior success, the challenges athletes face along the way, and what it really takes to build a champion.

A must-attend for sports parents, young athletes, coaches and everyone invested in understanding the journey to sporting excellence.

A school builds a sports facility for its students. Could that same facility help develop athletes from beyond its gates?

At our 7th Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series on “Designing Schools for Athletes: Rethinking Education for the Modern Student-Athlete,” Aakanksha Thapak, Director of the International Schools Sports Organisation (ISSO), @issoindia.official explores this possibility. She talks about ISSO’s partnership with Prometheus School, @prometheusschool which has eight badminton courts, and the larger opportunity for schools to contribute to India’s sporting ecosystem.

This power-code of sports is unlikely to change. What do you think? by @equalsportz

“Most of our young ones who took up the challenge to get into competitive sport had to really fight a battle. Very few organisations would step in to give them that support. That should not be how it is.”

At our 7th Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series, Ms. Shashi Banerjee, Director-Principal of VidyaGyan Leadership Academy and former Director of Education across Shiv Nadar Schools, shared practical ideas on how schools can better support young athletes from rethinking rigid structures to building in the flexibility that allows them to pursue both sport and education.

At our 7th Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series, on the topic, Designing Schools for Athletes: Rethinking Education for the Modern Student-Athlete, international shooter Shriyanka Sadangi @shriyanka_sadangi shared why some of life’s most important lessons aren’t learnt in classrooms, but on the playground.

We tell parents that children need to be adaptable to thrive in a changing world. Why, then, are the very education systems meant to prepare them for it still so inflexible?

In her opening remarks at our 7th Raising An Athlete Sports Talk Series, Amita Malhotra, @iamamitamalhotra, Founder, Equalsportz explored the contradictions in how we approach sport, education and the future of our children.

The discussion focused on Designing Schools for Athletes: Rethinking Education for the Modern Student-Athlete and how schools can better support the needs of young competitive athletes as well as reimagine sport as an essential for every child.

We had a wonderful evening of conversations around the realities of balancing training, competitions and exams, and what schools can do differently to support young athletes.

When does a young athlete need a sports psychologist? The million-dollar question every sports parent is asking.

@paddyupton, one of the world’s top high-performance coaches, who has worked with India’s 2011 Cricket World Cup-winning team, chess world champion D. Gukesh, and India’s Olympic bronze-winning hockey team, doesn’t mince words on this one.
