🌱 ERGO at the International Association for Plant Biotechnology (IAPB)

We’re proud to share that Dr. Eduardo J. Peña, ERGO’s CSO and CONICET scientist, presented our latest research at #IAPB2026.

His presentation, “Optimizing recombinant protein production in Daucus carota suspension cultures: the role of host-specific genetic elements,” explores how endogenous genetic elements can be leveraged to improve recombinant protein production in carrot cell cultures.

The study combines transcriptomic and proteomic analyses, automated cloning, and high-throughput expression screening to identify regulatory sequences tailored to the host and culture system.

This work was conducted in collaboration with Instituto de Biotecnología y Biología Molecular (IBBM - CONICET - UNLP), Global Institute for Food Security, and NOVABIOMA, and highlights the potential of host-specific, metabolically guided strategies to advance more efficient and sustainable plant-based biomanufacturing.

The research also contributes to the genetic engineering strategies behind EUKARYA®️, ERGO’s platform for scalable plant cell-based production of high-value proteins and ingredients.

During his time in Saskatchewan, Eduardo also connected with several organizations and innovation partners within the University of Saskatchewan ecosystem and its campus, including Innovation Saskatchewan, the Crop Development Centre (CDC), GIFS, and the Global Agri-Food Advancement Partnership.

These interactions provided valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, strengthen collaborations, and connect ERGO’s work with the broader Canadian agri-food and biotechnology ecosystem.

From cutting trees to growing cells: how Taxol changed natural ingredient production

🌿 Imagine needing to cut down entire trees to produce a life-saving drug.

That was the reality of Taxol (paclitaxel)—a breakthrough anticancer compound originally extracted from the bark of the Pacific yew tree (Taxus brevifolia).

The challenge was clear: Low yields, high costs, and an unsustainable process that depended on natural resources.

🧪 Plant cell culture changed the game.

Instead of harvesting trees, scientists began growing yew cells in bioreactors—turning production into a controlled, scalable, and sustainable process.

What changed?
✔️Reliable and consistent production
✔️Drastically lower environmental impact
✔️True scalability
✔️Independence from raw plant harvesting

✨Taxol became a landmark proof that plant cell culture is not just a scientific concept—it’s an industrial reality.

And more importantly: it showed that we can produce high-value natural compounds without compromising the ecosystems they come from.

🚀Today, this same approach is opening new possibilities across pharma, food, cosmetics, and agriculture. by @ergobioscience

📊 Validated performance. Scalable opportunity.

At ERGO, we don’t just develop casein — we validate its impact where it matters most: in the final product.

When incorporating ERGO β-caseins into plant-based cheese formulations, we observed:
🔥 +25% improvement in melting capacity vs. casein-free formulations — approaching mozzarella-like performance
👃 +85% increase in sensory acceptance (panel-tested)
🌿 −50% reduction in off-notes
🧀 +88% increase in dairy-like notes
🎯 +60% increase in overall flavor intensity

These results translate into a more balanced, realistic, and consumer-relevant cheese experience.

Through our EUKARYA®️ platform, we produce casein in a controlled environment using plant cells — delivering the functionality of traditional dairy proteins, without the constraints of conventional systems.

This is not just about matching dairy. It’s about delivering measurable improvements in taste, texture, and performance.

Rethinking Cocoa Production 🍫🌱

Cocoa is one of the world’s most essential ingredients. Yet its production still depends on factors no one can fully control.
🌍 Climate change
📉 Unpredictable yields
🦠 Plant diseases
🌱 Limited arable land
📍 Geographic concentration

When harvests fluctuate, the entire value chain feels it — from availability to pricing.
For companies building global brands, uncertainty is not a strategy.

At ERGO, we can produce cocoa differently.
We cultivate the same cocoa cell line directly in bioreactors 🧪
🚫 It’s not a reformulation.
🚫 It’s not a substitute.
🚫 It’s not a synthetic alternative.

We grow cocoa from its own cells, preserving the same flavor, aroma, and functionality that define it.

So what changes?
🌍 Production independent of geography
🌦️ No exposure to climate volatility
🌱 No soil limitations
🦠 No crop disease risk
📈 Predictable and scalable output

The same cocoa — produced with precision.

Because the future of chocolate 🍫 should be built on control, not uncertainty.
