The goal was to see the Northern Lights, and Iceland came through 🇮🇸
Without knowing if conditions would cooperate, they took the chance after finding out about the @icelandair stopover and made it to Reykjavík. The kids and Eric got to experience Italy—its history, culture, and FOOD 🇮🇹 Taiten asked to visit Pompeii after a school project, making it a fun day trip that brought his research to life. Compared old photos of us from nearly 20 years ago in the same spots and talked about what’s changed. Even with a little rain, Rome was incredible! Taiten competed in the 2025 Paraclimbing National Championships and placed 3rd in M-Youth! His dedication, passion, and heart for this sport inspire us beyond words. The entire weekend was an incredible experience, surrounded by athletes of all abilities who continue to push limits and redefine what’s possible. Every competitor left us in awe. A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible—we’re so grateful! This is just the beginning, and we’re so excited for what’s ahead!

Missing Japan already...the warmth of family, the incredible food, the rich culture—even the vending machines! Every day was an adventure filled with unforgettable experiences.

We savored the freshest sushi, melt-in-your-mouth wagyu in Kobe, Michelin-starred ramen, and shockingly amazing 7-Eleven snacks! One of the most special moments was making homemade gyozas with our family in the countryside, where the rice they harvest themselves-those meals will stay with us forever.

We admired the stunning beauty of Japan at sunset from Shibuya Sky, immersed ourselves in the magic of TeamLab Planets, and let loose at DisneySea, Disneyland, and Universal Studios. We also experienced the beauty and tradition of matcha tea ceremonies and stepped back in time, visiting ancient shrines, majestic castles, and reflecting on history in Hiroshima.

From meeting adorable capybaras, feisty deers in Nara, and hungry monkeys in Kyoto to exploring countless Pokémon Centers, we embraced everything Japan had to offer. A month wasn’t nearly enough, and we're already counting down the days until we can go back.

We hope it won’t be another decade before we go back. Until next time, Japan—thank you for the memories ✌🏻 taken in Japan by @eric.wakefield

Taiten conquered Mt. Shasta, reaching the breathtaking 14,179-foot summit! Overcoming his vision challenges, he navigated up and down the rocky mountain terrain with unstoppable determination. With a major storm closing in, they had to pick up the pace to avoid getting caught in the snow and 75 mph winds! When they reached the summit, clouds wrapped around the mountain, but a clear path opened just for them—a beautiful sign that God was guiding their every step. I’m beyond grateful to Kai for being the ultimate big brother and to Eric for his invaluable mountain knowledge that made this journey possible! Taiten's resilience and spirit are truly beyond inspiring, proving that with faith and determination, there are no limits to what you can achieve!

Kai, age 10, sending Glitter Gulch, 5.11a, at Sweet Pain Wall in Red Rock, NV. It took him a few tries to work his way through the crux moves during his first attempt. Then he sent it clean on top rope his second attempt. I tried to convince him to lead it for the red point, but he wasn't having it. Taiten always looking up to his big brother and sister finally summited Mt. St. Helens!! This was Taiten's first, Kai's second (a day before his 9th birthday...Happy Birthday Kai 🎂) and Mayumi's third time to summit. Taiten did an amazing job especially navigating through the boulder fields considering his limited vision. One reason to be thankful for the long winter was all the snow; we were able to glissade 3,700 vertical feet from the summit essentially back to base camp. All the kids were champs, not a single complaint. Would definitely say it was a successful trip. Taiten asked, "Which mountain is next?" I love this kid's grit 💪🏼🏔️😎
