“Die old, as young as possible”

Grateful for another lap around the sun on this amazing third rock from it. 🌍☀️
62 trips completed.

I feel incredibly blessed — for my family, my health, and the chance to wake up each day with purpose. I thank God for that daily. Life isn’t easy (for any of us), and I’ve had my share of challenges and struggles — but that’s part of the gift. The work, the growth, the climb.

A century ago, average life expectancy for men was about 60. I’m 62 — and still training and climbing close to what I could do at 30. Not by accident. It takes intention, discipline, two-a-day workouts, clean nutrition, and consistent recovery. No shortcuts anymore — just commitment.

If I could give two rules to every Masters athlete:

Rule #1: Do something physical EVERY day. Use it or lose it.
Rule #2: DON’T act your age — live like you’re half it.

Still training. Still learning. Still coaching. Still getting after it. Let’s go! 💪

Love to you all 🙏🏻

The @physivantage brand is a reflection of my personal belief system...

I BELIEVE in the power of climbing...and its life-changing potential. I believe that climbing brings passionate people together in a purposeful and peaceful endeavor, irrespective of background, ethnicity, religion, age and sex. I believe in partnership and the unity of the rope (and spot). I believe in the "unlikely" and "impossible", and that embarking on a meaningful journey is tantamount to success, regardless if the destination or goal is reached. I believe in a higher calling and that the minutes of our lives are precious and best lived with purpose and joy.

A bonus to last weekend’s Rocktober Fest at the Red was my friend, @noahkaufmanmd wedding. The rain clouds parted just in time for a beautiful ceremony and evening of celebration! Lisa and I had a blast…right up until our flat tire on a pitch dark and muddy KY back road on the way home. But that’s another story….

Long-overdue photo drop from our western road trip this June and July! 🚐🏔️

From our home in PA, we covered more than 6,000 miles, with stops in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Tahoe, Squamish, Skaha, Canmore, Glacier National Park, and plenty of places in between.

Along the way, we worked a couple of climbing festivals, taught clinics, presented at the Climbing Medicine Symposium, visited some great new gyms, explored beautiful places, and met so many wonderful people.

The highlight, of course, was spending time with our boys, @cam_horst and @jonathan_horst…who we don’t get to see nearly enough now that they’ve flown the coop for the mountain west. 🥲❤️

What an inspiring three days at the Canadian Climbing Medicine Symposium, held in beautiful Squamish, British Columbia.

As a member of the CCMS faculty, I was both proud and humbled to present alongside an outstanding group of physicians, physiotherapists, and other experts dedicated to advancing climbing science. The attendees were equally impressive—generously sharing their knowledge and experiences throughout the symposium, then bringing the same energy and camaraderie to the boulders and crags during our evening climbing sessions.

A huge thank-you and congratulations to @yasser.elsheikh , @dr.marietabuse.nd, @climbing_physiotherapy , the sponsor brands, and everyone else who helped organize and execute this truly unique, world-class event. It was an honor to be part of it!

🔥Every once in a while, an athletic performance comes along that transcends the sport itself. One of those moments happened yesterday when Josh Kerr shattered the 27-year-old mile world record, running an astonishing 3:42.66.

Most climbers will never race a mile on a track, but the mindset and training principles that enabled Kerr to become the fastest miler in history apply remarkably well to anyone pursuing difficult climbing goals.

The same could be said of @brookeraboutou and @janja_garnbret in becoming the first women to climb the penultimate grade of 5.15c. Likewise, @tommycaldwell’s seven-year journey to establish the Dawn Wall (5.14d), and @adam.ondra’s long, methodical campaign to create Silence (5.15d), exemplify the same unwavering commitment to preparation, patience, and belief.

In watching and reading interviews with Josh Kerr, I was struck by how little he talked about extraordinary workouts or revolutionary training methods. Instead, he spoke about confidence, consistency, patience, and trusting the process. Those same principles have been at the heart of every great climber I’ve coached over the past four decade.

👉Keep reading at the link in profile.

First time climbing in the Uintas. Beautiful! A nice reprieve from the heat…although increasing monsoonal moisture made for frequent afternoon storms. But sport climbing above 10.000’ is novel—don’t think I’ve ever climbed sport routes this high before. Where else in the US are there copious sport routes above 10,000 feet?

Always a great time at the @climbersfestival …and teaching my clinic “Climbing Your Best over Age 40” (photo) at the legendary Wild Iris!

Love the Lander climbing and community…which is why we’ve visited here most summers since 1992.

Thanks @lasportivana @dmm_climbing @bluewaterropes @physivantage for supporting me and my climbing events.

A glorious day in Wyoming Sunday with clear skies, Springlike temps, and a stiff breeze. Finally got to check out The Octagon, a steep cave not far from the mouth of Ten Sleep Canyon. If glued choss makes you wince, then this isn’t your place. But if you enjoy steep athletic climbing, then do check it out for a pumpy side mission during your next visit to Ten Sleep!

Video is my onsight of THE to-do 5.12a here, “Bum Rush”…with lots of shaking along the way! Worth the visit by itself…but also a great warm-up for the harder cave routes.

Thanks @arnouldtkint for a fun afternoon of choss pulling!
