"More than Mies Mimesis" - ERA featured in @aninteriormag. Kelly Pau writes: "The approach then was not to mimic but to naturally evolve the preexisting language of the building. New additions maintain the clean lines and order that define the building but in a way that feels at home to the space and its new needs."

Burnham Prize 2026: The Future of State:

Last week, a group of our jurors walked State Street together, observing, discussing, and reflecting on its past, present, and future. We asked them: "What assumptions about State Street do you hope competitors will challenge?"

Swipe through to hear their thoughts!

Layers of sheer curtains create spaces for both individual contemplation and communal gathering at @floatspacetime With the use of simple and natural materials, ERA's design creates an elemental setting of calm and quiet that contrasts with the spa’s urban context.

Nicole Toma writes: “Eric Rothfeder and his eponymous studio have reimagined a once-fragmented floor plan as a singular, flowing residence. What were once several smaller apartments are now stitched into a full-floor apartment that spans the length of the building, framed by uninterrupted vistas of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline.” Read more at @est_living

The Promenade Apartment is a full floor renovation in Mies van der Rohe’s Commonwealth Plaza, a landmark 1957 residential tower. Recently featured in @antineriormag, Kelly Pau writes that the project “reimagines the space by using the building’s famed curtain wall as interior context, an approach that doesn’t seek to imitate Mies but work in conversation with him.” (Link in bio)

Rather than extend their existing residence, the client wanted a separate building that embodied a simpler, more direct relationship with the landscape. The initial brief for a Finnish sauna was combined with a small indoor gathering space, and a sleeping loft at the height of the tree canopy.
