Michelangelo and I actually have a lot in common, like how people think I’m just a cool badass but in reality I’m a complicated portrait of what happens when a person adopts pizza as their whole identity. 🤙 by @ericcgarneau

Cloud and I actually have a lot in common, like how people think I’m just a cool badass but in reality I’m a complicated portrait of what happens when a person adopts defensive machismo out of deep shame for previous failures. Or something. Big swords are cool! taken in Square Enix by @ericcgarneau

Thank you so much to @skeletalgames for giving my friends and I the sickest spot to hang out and play games on a Saturday night (the knives are cus of Blood on the Clocktower). You better believe I have Opinions about game stores and these folks are the real deal, providing a wildly welcoming and fun place to sit around the table in a part of the city that craves it. taken in Bridgeport Art Center by @ericcgarneau

Last week I finished reading an incredible book on heartland rock and populist politics called Won’t Back Down, and it inspired me to take a day trip to some of the major landmarks of the scene (Indiana, as it turns out, puts the “heartland” in “heartland rock”). Not pictured are the Sony DADC plant in Terre Haute, which manufactured the first CD in the US (Born in the USA, naturally) and the studio in Nashville IN where Mellencamp and REM made two of my favorite albums of the 80s.

Suckin on a chili dog outside the Jiffy Treet (fun fact - there is no Tastee Freez anywhere near where Mellencamp grew up).

Tessa is a silly dog outside the Jiffy Treet.

Mellencamp’s boyhood version of the Tastee Freez, Kovener’s Korner (no chili dogs tho).

I dunno man, there’s something pretty wild that a dude from this house could get near-ruinous career advice from David Bowie’s manager to call himself “Johnny Cougar” and perform hypermasculine drag, only to find true success writing about the real people around him. London and Mars couldn’t be any further from Seymour, Indiana.

My reward for busting my butt at Gen Con was getting to see people dressed as Transformers cover INXS and Madonna. Truly one of the coolest shows I’ve ever been to; thank you @cybertronicband for an incredible night. taken in Reggie's Rock Club by @ericcgarneau

Started the day at church (for a friend) and ended at church too (for rock & roll).

The first time I saw the basement of Thalia Hall was when @mortifiedchicago played there in 2022. The second time was tonight when, two songs into the Hold Steady storytellers set, venue staff hustled us down there because of a tornado. Worth it. Hopefully we get good weather for the Salt Shed on Saturday 🤘 by @ericcgarneau

Grateful to have lived my life in such a way that I could convince this many people to go see Masters of the Universe with me for my birthday.

This is absolutely true - before the movie I ordered my go-to kids’ snack pack from the concession stand (it’s the best value at the theater, I swear) and the guy working the counter laughed out loud. “Sorry I’m laughing,” he said, “it’s just I never see adult men order snack packs, only women.” A fitting story for going to see MOTU, I think. New Pornographers at Metro - geez, these folks are tight as heck, and they make music that makes me feel good. What a show! I think their new album is the best they’ve put out since 2014. Opener Will Sheff remains one of my all-time favorite songwriters, and seeing him stripped down in such an intimate venue helped salve over the sting of not getting to see Bruce this week. All for $39! Great night. taken in Metro Chicago by @ericcgarneau

For this Friday’s show @lh_schubas, we brought in a few pals to round out our regular house band, so we could really do justice to our favorite Twin Cities music. Joining Dwight, Katie, Jeff, and Eric for one night only are Jim Snedeker on lead guitar and Nick DePrey on keys. At rehearsal last night, Katie and Nick took us to church. You ready? by @ericcgarneau

Producer Eric here - I’ve gotten to visit the Twin Cities a couple times in the past year and I’ve had a blast each time. I think they’re beautiful places to be, full of great nature and art and food and people. I’m really thrilled to have an opportunity to raise money for our neighbors there with our upcoming benefit show for @miracmn. Ticket link in bio! (And hell yeah I walked across that Grain Belt Bridge, as @theholdsteady demand). taken in Minneapolis, Minnesota by @ericcgarneau
