Last night was ridiculous, cathartic, and wonderful. I got to share some of Little Carey's biggest dreams, secrets, and mishaps with an audience of friends and strangers alike, standing on the stage of the beautiful and historic Music Box Theatre, while my eighth-grade school picture, bangs 'n' acne 'n' all, was projected behind me on a giant movie screen. I read a poem about the time a friend of mine betrayed me by...getting a haircut and wearing eyeshadow. I shared diary entries about acquiring my first bra and waiting for my first period. I told the story of the time my next-door neighbor and I formed a "performance group" called "STREET KIDS," and I performed our theme song, an original rap I wrote in 1991. I cannot wait to share the video with you all once it's ready, but in the meantime, I am so grateful to @ericcgarneau , @marnieshure , and everyone else at @mortifiedchicago as well as @wbezchicago and the @musicboxchicago for creating a space where folks can celebrate awkwardness, weirdness, and humanity.

Here’s a shot of our band last night from producer @zemidas_touch and a huge thank you to everyone who came to the show at the Studebaker! We had a blast and it felt like you did too! Pro pictures and video will be coming soon, but for now, we just wanted to say how much y’all rock.

TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT! Mortified celebrates 20 years of shame with our biggest show yet. Featuring some of our favorite pieces from Dave Nadelberg, Liz Grossman, Katie

Johnston-Smith, Robert Kingett, and Nick Sansone. We’ll have special guests that will help bring these stories to life including David Pasquesi, Katie Rich, Parker Callahan, Eunji Kim, Odinaka Ezeokoli, and Chloe Mikala. And musical guests Mark Rose from Spitalfield and Brendan Kelly from the Lawrence Arms will be playing some tunes and jumping in with the Mortified house band. Share the shame with us tonight @thevicchicago!

The Mortified Band kicks off each show with a few nostalgic tunes inspired by our performers’ pieces. (Swipe for a shot of them singing Weird Al’s “The Saga Begins” at our May the 4th show.) What songs do you want to hear at our Sept. 23 show at @studebaker_theater? Drop ‘em in the comments! 📸: @nolasco_giovanni
