Standing in front of Prince’s old house in the Bridle Path. Two streets that way is Drake’s.

Drake’s uncle was Prince’s spiritual brother.

Larry Graham invented slap bass in Sly and the Family Stone. He spent 19 years as Prince’s mentor — bassist on the tours, the man who introduced Prince to the Jehovah’s Witnesses faith, the witness to the SLAVE-on-the-face war with Warner Bros and the unpronounceable-symbol years that followed.

Larry’s half-brother Dennis Graham is Drake’s father.

Drake performed with Larry on stage at OVO Fest 2011 and Coachella 2013. In a 2010 MTV interview, Drake called Larry a foundational influence on his songwriting, his singing, and his stagecraft.

When Sir Lucian Grainge said the quiet part out loud on Tuesday’s UMG call — that the major-label model needs artists who don’t know what they’re signing — Drake heard it the way most artists couldn’t.

He heard it as a family conversation.

Two streets between these houses. Two generations between Prince and Drake. The lineage made it inevitable.

Dad would have been 96 last Friday. I sat by his bed when he died at 6am at a hospice near me 4 yrs ago. Miss him every day. Always willing to jump in his car to drive down to meet me for a coffee, those bear hugs. Salt-N-Pepa lost their masters case in January.

Then I listened to all 29 minutes of their appeal.

A federal appeals judge asked Universal’s lawyer a simple question:

If Salt-N-Pepa never transferred these copyrights, how does Universal own them?

His eventual response:

“I take your point on the 2 pre-existing albums.”

That is NOT a ruling.

Salt-N-Pepa have not won their appeal.

And the same judge later pushed their lawyer hard on the work-for-hire argument.

So I pulled the court decision.

The copyright registrations.

The termination notices.

And then I found filings involving the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Slick Rick, EPMD and others.

I’m doing something different today.

Normally I bring you the facts, filings, numbers and data — and you decide.

This time I’m giving you my opinion.

I’m four hours into JAŸ-Z IN 8, and I keep asking myself the same question:

Where are the last 20 years?

We hear about Marcy. The struggle. His father. Drugs. Trenton. The world that created the young Jay-Z.

But Shawn Carter escaped that world decades ago.

Good for him.

That’s the American dream.

But where does the source material come from now?

And maybe the scariest question for any artist isn’t:

What if the album flops?

Maybe it’s:

What if I release it and nobody cares?

Drake is still being judged by what he does next.

Jay-Z is being celebrated for what he did then.

Those are both extraordinary places to be.

But they’re not the same place.

Agree?

Jay-Z does not own Reasonable Doubt. A federal judgment from June 2022 says Roc-A-Fella Records, Inc. owns it. He owns a third of the shares, Kareem Burke owns a third, and Damon Dash’s third was auctioned by a US Marshal in November 2024 at a hotel on 11th Avenue.

The buyers were the New York State tax department and New York City’s social services department. They paid with a $1 million credit bid. The Marshal’s own report says no actual funds were received.

He filed to take the album back in 2031. You don’t file one of those for something you already own.

Nobody can own the AI Hotel Lobby videos. Copyright needs a human author and there isn't one.

But the performance underneath is a commercial master, released on Quality Control and Motown, under exclusive license to UMG Recordings.

On 30 July, Universal's CEO told investors that licensed innovation is replacing unlicensed exploitation, and that it's their North Star. Their digital chief described an opt-in system that reaches artists and their estates.

Master P owns his masters. That is true and this does not dispute it.

But a music video is a third copyright. Not the song. Not the master. The Copyright Act carves “sounds accompanying a motion picture or other audiovisual work” out of the sound recording definition, so a video is a separate work with a separate owner.

Under 1990s label deals the video was a work made for hire, and audiovisual works are one of only 9 categories where that argument actually works. Sound recordings are not on the list.

Which means the masters have a 35-year take-back door in them. The videos may have none.

A viewer asked who owns the No Limit videos. I searched the federal register 4 ways over 3 days and could not find one. That’s a failed search, not a finding. If you can find a registration number, I want it. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @ericjackson
