Eric Jackson may have surfaced one of the most interesting theories yet about why André 3000 walked away from rap, and he deserves real credit for doing the kind of digging most people simply don’t do. Jackson, who runs EMJ Capital and built his channel around reading primary filings instead of repeating headlines, traced copyright and transfer records tied to OutKast and found that André and Big Boi do not appear as claimants on the group’s master recordings, while the catalog moved through LaFace, Arista and eventually Sony. He also found a 2021 filing showing André transferred publishing interests tied to roughly 570 compositions to Primary Wave. Jackson’s theory is that after helping create one of the greatest catalogs in hip-hop history, André may have reached a point where continuing to feed a system built around music he didn’t fully own no longer felt worth it. To be clear, André has never said that is why he stopped rapping, so this remains Jackson’s interpretation of the paper trail, not established fact. But it is a compelling enough theory that it deserves to be discussed on its own terms. Credit to Eric Jackson for actually doing the research behind it. Do you think ownership could have played a bigger role in André 3000 leaving rap than we’ve been told?
