I’ve been adapting my old glass and shooting on modern cameras. What I’m really enjoying lately is how immediate everything feels.

I notice each lens’s character right away. The focus softly rolling in and out, the direct effect of opening and closing the aperture, and how those changes add emotion to the scene.

It pulls me into the process. I’m making choices instead of just pointing and shooting.

It lets me be involved. It lets me be a photographer.

Hopped on for a couple dates of a West Coast tour with @illiteratelight and @molowda. Caught them at the Troubadour in Hollywood, then drove down to see them again in San Diego. After the show, we went to play some pool at a place called Aero Bar. The ambience was perfect. I snapped some portraits and stayed up way too late. by @ericlsingerrrrr

On February 9, 2020, I took a drive. It was one of those days when you just need to get outside and maybe do a little light trespassing. I borrowed Cody’s Nissan Xterra and headed east along CA-166, a highway that winds through a series of canyons in Los Padres National Forest. It’s a beautiful drive.

About 23 miles in, I spotted a small turnoff in a canyon. It led to a cattle tunnel under the highway, opening to a dried-up creek bed on the north side. I followed the creek for a while, but it felt too low...I wanted elevation. So I scrambled up a couple of steep hills and ended up on top of a rock formation about a thousand feet above the highway. From up there, I could see everything. I had my Minolta X-700 with me back then, and I’m sure I snapped some pretty cool shots.

Four years later, I felt the same pull. This time I took my Tacoma down that same winding road, looking for the same turnoff. I found it, and once again climbed the same rock formation—this time with my Pentax 645, a couple of lenses, and a tripod. I took photos (this one, in particular), watched the shadows slide across the hills and rock faces, and saw cars and trucks pass far below.

When I got back to my truck, I checked Google Photos to see when I’d last been there. It was exactly four years and one day earlier.

I don’t know if it was coincidence or something quieter at work,
but standing there in the same place, I realized I wasn’t the same person who’d been there before. I had put some miles behind me, some easy ones and some hard ones.

That rock, the creek, those hills hadn’t changed, but I sure as hell had. by @ericlsingerrrrr

Lynn and I went down to Los Angeles in late September 2022 for my friend Evan’s celebration of life ceremony. I knew it was going to be an emotional trip, so I booked a cozy Airbnb up in the hills. Evan had always encouraged people to travel comfortably—to treat themselves to interesting, beautiful places.

Which is pretty ironic, considering we met and bonded while traveling in the exact opposite way: crammed in the back of a tour van with three, four, sometimes five other people, schlepping across the country. Sleeping sweaty in Seattle alleyways, “splitting queenies” in friends’ apartments or their parents’ basements.

We drank so much whiskey. Smoked so much weed. We abused ourselves without hesitation. And maybe because of that we came to know comfort not just as something to appreciate, but as something we’d earned.

Anyway, I miss you, Evan. We all do. You left a wide, impossible-to-fill space among us living folks here on Earth. by @ericlsingerrrrr

I won an eBay auction for a Pentax 645 medium format camera sometime in 2022. I wasn't on Instagram back then, and I've been enjoying my 35mm cameras these days so I never shared any of my 120mm photos.

I got into scanning my own negatives (to cut down on cost and to try and beef up the quality control) and building my own scanning rig using some cardboard, gaff tape, and 2 pieces of museum glass. Despite some Gaussian blurs the results were actually really nice, fine enough for instagram. Next I will try to wet mount some negatives and see how those turn out. But thats a winter-time activity. Summer is for outside. by @ericlsingerrrrr

I texted the real estate agent of this property for permission to access it. I was already up there for a few hours when he texted me back and said he couldn't exactly "give" me "permission," but also couldn't and wouldn't stop me from climbing up there, assuring me that locals did it all the time. I'll come back for this view again another time.

I've had this little moto for a couple of years now. There's currently a laundry list of work needing to be done, and it's in my garage under a sheet. I think it's time to dust it off and get it back on the country roads and farm trails.
