POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Film frames from the @vsco photo walk in Morro Bay in early August. (Thanks for developing and scanning @negativelab!)

These were made on a medley of Kodak Ektar 100, Kodak Gold 200, Kodak Ektacolor Pro 400, and Kodak Portra 800 (Thanks, @timryugo_kodak!) on my custom Mamiya RB67 with prism finder and pistol grip with a combination of 65mm, 90mm and 180mm Mamiya-Sekor C lenses.

Thanks again to @jaketovar.co, @jofo_photo and @zachhodgesphoto for making it all happen! I met so many cool people and had fun exploring and photographing with other creative folks.

It had actually been a long time since I shot this much film in one go. It’s still quite expensive and not every shot is a winner, but I enjoy the slowness, effort and intentionality each frame requires.

Last weekend, I had the absolute privilege of joining the @vsco photowalk at Morro Bay hosted by @jaketovar.co and @jofo_photo and made possible by @zachhodgesphoto.

It was so great to roam with photographers and creative folks of all kinds—some who I had met before and some who I met for the first time—and be inspired by their stories and their drive to create.

These are all iPhone photos—taken with my trusty iPhone 13—edited with the @vsco app using a custom recipe I’ve developed based off of the AGA1 preset. (And one based on the IR3 preset.)

It was also a fun time showing people my favorite Mamiya RB67 setup; it’s so heavy, but so satisfying. I sent the four rolls of film that I shot that evening (thanks for some of that film @timryugo_kodak !) to @negativelab to get developed, so I’ll be sharing more photos soon.

Keep making, friends.

Getting ready to go back home (that’s right I called it home) to Oxford.

California it’s been real. This whole year has been a lot but gosh look how amazing my friends are.

I sure love you all more than you’ll ever know, but also: look what beautiful big smiles everyone has. I love it.

Bye Instagram, it’s been real.

One of the great privileges of my life has been knowing creative people. Not just artists, although plenty of those too. Painters with stained hands. Ceramicists who somehow see a bowl inside a lump of clay. Musicians carrying melodies around like spare change in their pockets. Carpenters who can look at a pile of lumber and see a table before the first cut is made. Poets, writers, shop owners, bakers, chefs, baristas. People who spend their days making things that did not exist before they showed up.

The older I get, the more convinced I am that creativity has very little to do with art and everything to do with how a person moves through the world. Some people seem determined to leave things exactly as they found them. Creative people rarely do. They are forever rearranging, tinkering, experimenting, asking what if. They season a recipe differently. Move the furniture around. Start a business no one thinks will work. Write the first sentence. Plant something where there was only dirt. They understand that creation is an act of hope. You do not make things unless you believe, on some level, that tomorrow can be different than today.

And maybe my favorite kind of creative people are the ones whose art is harder to point at. The people who love creatively. The people who tell stories in a way that makes you feel like you’ve been let in on a secret. The people who can turn an ordinary conversation into something memorable. The people who make room for others. Who host dinners, build communities, remember birthdays, and somehow make everyone around them feel a little more interesting than they felt before. They remind me that creativity is not a skill set. It is a posture. A way of paying attention. A refusal to accept that the world is finished. And every time I find myself surrounded by people like that, I leave feeling a little more alive, a little more curious, and a little more convinced that making things, whether it is a loaf of bread or a beautiful life, is one of the most worthwhile things a person can do.

There is a quiet society of people who refuse to become completely hardened by the world.

You can usually recognize them by small signs. They notice things. They care a little too much. They laugh easily. They occasionally feel overwhelmed by the beauty or sadness of ordinary moments.

In other words, they are tender.

Crayon Ritual exists partly to protect this quality. Or at least to gather the people who still practice it.

On March 20 at 7pm we’ll meet at Satellite of Love for a conversation on tenderness with Adam Pasion, Eric Singer, and Tyler Wohlford. No experts, no presentations. Just a few thoughtful people thinking out loud together about how to remain open hearted.

The evening will also include music from Josh Cody.

If you suspect you might belong to this unofficial society, you are warmly invited.

Lately there’s been a quiet suspicion that something important has slipped away from us. Not in some dramatic way. Just gradually. The way kindness used to happen without effort. The way we once trusted each other a little more easily. The way we didn’t guard every soft part of ourselves quite so carefully. Most of us can remember that version of things, even if we can’t say exactly when it changed.

So this is a small attempt to look at that together. Nothing too formal. Just a room, some music, something to drink, and a few thoughtful humans willing to sit down and talk about tenderness out loud. What it means. Why it seems harder now. Whether it’s something we’ve actually lost or just something we stopped practicing. If you’ve had the same quiet suspicion, you may find yourself in good company.

Thanks for the Reco is back on March 20th at Satellite of Love, and we are talking about tenderness. Which, to be clear, is not code for crying in public, though I cannot rule anything out.
I will be joined by Adam Pasion, Eric Singer, and Tyler Wohlford for a conversation about what tenderness actually looks like in real life. Not the curated version. The everyday kind. The kind that shows up in how we listen, how we argue, how we care for people, and how we sometimes avoid all of that entirely.
Thanks for the Reco is just people in a room having an honest conversation. No experts. No answers. Just curiosity, stories, and the relief of realizing you are not the only one thinking about these things. March 20th. Satellite of Love. Come sit with us for a bit.
