Today my father Richard Mar would have turned 109. Though he passed in 2004 he’s always with me - when I am down, I hear his joyful whistling which pulls me back up. Today I’m playing Horace Silver’s Song for My Father on my flugelhorn and remembering my dad. Born in Toisan, China in 1917 my dad immigrated through Angel Island with my grandma and aunt in 1918 and was released to Donaldina Cameron in SF Chinatown (Cameron House) in Jan 1919. They settled in Modesto where he grew up and my grandfather Louie Mar had been a merchant since 1878. Dad was an avid photographer and artist before he joined the Army Air Corps in WWII where he served in Saipan as a B29 Superfortress gunner. He married Betty Lee in 1943 and settled in Sacramento’s Southside Park neighborhood after the war. He raised me and my 4 siblings with a special warmth, humor and care that I have never been able to match. Jade and I thoroughly enjoyed Somerville/Boston/Cambridge for the 21st HONK! Festival this past weekend. I was also lucky to hang out with longtime Asian American Movement leaders Mike Liu and May Louie too. Highlights were performing Sunday night in the pouring rain outside Boston’s notorious Suffolk County Jail and with my comrades in BLO! (Brass Liberation Orchestra) from the Bay, but also with members of other bands like Vermont’s Brass Balagan, Minneapolis’ Brass Solidarity, DC Activist Street Band, Pittsburgh’s Brassica and the Wild Sprouts, and NYC’s Rude Mechanical Orchestra (BLO💚RMO/RMO❤️BLO!). I stayed with the family of 7 year old Julia, the youngest member of Somerville’s School of HONK! taken in Somerville, Massachusetts by @ericmar415
