As a professional working artist, safeguarding my work through copyright is essential to securing my financial future and livelihood. In 2014, Prince took the product of my labor and creative vision, slapped his name on it, and sold it for a bunch of money. In such a situation, copyright law was my only recourse. This judgment demonstrates that my copyright means something and that fair use is not a free pass to take everything. The internet is NOT outside the law and is unequivocally within the realm of copyright protections.

When I initiated the legal battle against Richard Prince more than seven years ago, I could only dream of being part of these groundbreaking judgments that finally hold him accountable for his actions. This victory is not just mine but a triumph for all artists like me. We may not all have the same level of fame, but we all deserve recognition and compensation for our work. With this landmark victory, we have propelled the cause of protecting artists’ rights, setting a precedent for the next artist whose work is stolen without due credit or compensation.

We are at the outset of the battle in the digital realm of AI concerning copyright. I believe I have made an impact and set the stage.

It’s worth noting that Richard Prince attempted to settle with me multiple times throughout this legal process, but I consistently declined. I aimed to secure a judgment that he had infringed upon my copyright, which I ultimately obtained.

This is a great piece in New York Magazine and Vulture Thank you, Choire Sicha, Donald Graham and the editorial staff of New York Magazine, for publishing a part of my story.
Big Love to Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP (Chris and David) for sticking by me through thick and thin.

I’m a bit behind on the social media selfish pimp posts
..

Kiki & Herb were just in London for Pride and used this image for the poster, which was originally taken for BAM when we were emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. It was a giant cut-out in the theater. Hilarious, and I loved it.

Reposted from Viv:

“Check out these old chestnuts from @sohotheatre. When you’ve kept the receipts
because you knew, YOU knew deep, wayyyy deep down that New York cabaret legends Kiki & Herb would crash-land back into London once again. So what if it’s 17 years between the chaos, carnage, and cabaret, we’re still not over it. Scroll & you’ll see why. 3 nights only in our ‘jaw-dropping’ new venue. See you at the piano, darlings x”

On Friday, February 28th, at 10:03 am (CT), my father, Randy Mathews McNatt, passed away due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was surrounded by loved ones and departed peacefully at the home of his daughter, Micah Sealy, with her family by his side. He was 81 years old.

Randy was born in San Antonio, TX, to Glen McNatt and Helen Kothmann in late July 1943. The family later moved to Abilene, where his younger brother, Logan McNatt, was born in 1950. In October 1957, they relocated to Brownwood, TX, where Glen (my grandfather) opened the first Social Security Administration office. Randy grew up in Brownwood, finding his group in high school while playing saxophone in the band and excelling at tennis. During this time, he also developed a deep love for the outdoors, where he spent time hunting and fishing with his uncles and cousins on the old Kothman Ranch in East Texas. There, he discovered his true passion, fish and wildlife, which he nurtured into a long career as a marine biologist and environmentalist.

My father was a brilliant man and dedicated his life to environmental conservation and science. After completing his doctorate, he moved to Albuquerque in June 1978 for a position at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. After three years there, he took a research position in Vernal, UT, conducting population studies of rare native fishes in the Green and Yampa Rivers. In 1983, he moved to Reno, NV, for a position with the Endangered Species Office of the USFWS, and in 1993, he accepted a position at the Bureau of Land Management as the Nevada State Program Lead for Fisheries, Endangered Species, and Wetlands. He remained in the position until he retired in January of 2005.

I’m so thankful he’s not here to witness the dismantling of all the work he and his colleagues did to protect the earth. He would be furious and outspoken about Musk’s actions to undermine our National Parks and natural resources. Trump represents everything my father opposed.

I love you, Dad. I wish I had told you more often and in person. by @ericmcnatt

B*TCHCRAFT: A Musical Play, tells the story of how a quiet child from suburban Detroit became the queer icon and beloved musical artist Bitch (Bitch and Animal, Kill Rock Stars, Shortbus). Through her touching, incisive and often funny autobiographical story, we follow Bitch’s journey from third daughter of frustrated British ex-pat artists, to feminist warrior and acclaimed performance artist. The show is a wild musical broomstick ride through Bitch’s childhood, feminist awakening, indie rock stardom and subsequent brush with cancel-culture. A dynamic electric violin-laced pop treatise on patriarchy, self-actualization and triumph, B*TCHCRAFT will have you dancing in the aisles and inspired to brew your own bitchcraft in a world that needs it now more than ever.

I will be giving a talk about my work for the first time in a long while, next Tuesday, Sept 10th, as part of the SVA Masters Program. It is happening on the same night as Viv’s show at Joe’s Pub and Linda Simpson’s book launch, but I hope some of you can attend. The event is open to the public.
