The goals of the athletes are to dream big, train hard, and be coachable. The goals of the coach are to take a 10,000 foot view of the problem and find the optimal route for success and mitigate risks along the way. To turn dreams into trajectories. What people don’t realize is that it has to start as soon as possible. In Jiu-Jitsu, the elite level blue belts may have 10 years of experience. The path to black belt is shorter than their already lengthy career. By necessity, these individuals have to look past time and skill gaps and conventional notions of hierarchy. The likelihood of someone being successful in elite level competition and skipping this groundwork is very unlikely. And so the life of the athletes and the coaches involved maybe a difficult one. There’s no time to waste. There’s work that must be done. There’s skills you must have. I will find the shortest path and I will drag you through it kicking and screaming if I have to, for as long as you choose to be in the arena. But along the way you will gain things you can be proud of, to build around, a community, respect, and pupils of your own. Extremely proud of these gentleman. They’re already recognized as great coaches, teach seminars, give private lessons etc so early on in their career. Give em hell in Brazil boys, we’re nowhere near done yet. taken in 80/20 Jiu-Jitsu by @ericmtztx

Surreal day yesterday as Omni went from a handful of users to 140 overnight. Omni is a re-imagination of human/AI collaboration. Omni was born out of a dream to realize the future that promised by artificial intelligence. It is my responsibility to ensure that this community, my people, must not get left behind. Omni is a general-purpose AI agent for the future of work and education. Omni has access to ā€˜apps’ and can autonomously control them to orchestrate complex workflows. Omni, at launch, is now used by software engineering students at UTRGV and behind the scenes at UTHealth RGV to deliver high-quality software that impacts our critical business and clinical operations. But Omni won’t stop there as the goal is to scale this at UTRGV across other kinds of work and disciplines. The Omni ecosystem of tools establishes the RGV as leaders in applied AI as we directly compete with Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s offerings such as Claude Cowork, Claude Code, Codex, and others. Omni allows users to manage the chaos in their day to day and integrates project and task management so that human can delegate and supervise the work of fleets of autonomous AI agents running concurrently. By simultaneously teaching the first AI Engineering course at UTRGV using Omni and scaling it across our enterprise we’re developing a pipeline that allows us to train and employ the next generation of AI engineers here at home. Everyone looks past UTRGV and our community but here we are doing everything that they don’t have the imagination to do themselves and now they are forced to watch from the sidelines. by @ericmtztx

UT-REAL Health AI collaborative. Scaling AI to benefit patients and healthcare operations across TX. We’re building our AI capacity from the ground up at UTRGV / UTHealth RGV and investing into the future. Developing our own AI Agent development kit to rival Anthropic and OpenAI, teaching AI Agent engineering using this development kit, and putting it into operational practice at UTHealth RGV to build a new future. by @ericmtztx

It was an amazing event at the Texas Medical Center. We brought together more than 500 people from UT System leadership, health IT leaders, AI researchers, clinicians, health practitioners, medical educators, students, and industry. I was surrounded by the brightest minds in Texas—but, more importantly, my people. Several of my students traveled from the Valley to attend the event, which meant the world to me. My staff and colleagues joined as well. Last year, we were so happy just to be there, thinking that we didn’t belong. We thought we were behind and that everyone was surely doing more. We were wrong. This year, we knew we would have to be the ones to lay down the vision for how AI can be operationalized in healthcare today and what needs to be done in the future. We demonstrated the value of what can be accomplished now with autonomous AI agents and showed real examples of agents we have built for UT Health RGV. In another session, I explained how I approach AI literacy and education, demonstrated how we build AI agents, and showed how I train our local community to do this work. I’ve never been more swamped with interest in taking my course and rolling it out at new universities—in schools of medicine, bioinformatics, nursing, and continuing education for healthcare practitioners. There was a tremendous surge of requests for partnerships and to leverage my students. I was also able to lead a thought-provoking panel discussion with folks from Microsoft, Meta, Palantir, Epic, and Hippocratic AI. I met so many different people. I worry that we in Texas have this incredible opportunity in front of us and may not capture the moment. We have many opportunities to make unimaginable contributions that would shake the foundations of the practice of medicine and truly benefit humanity, but to get there we must drive change across many fronts. I’m so happy that, over the last two days, we were able to inspire leaders with ā€œthe visionā€ across all these different fronts. taken in Medical Center, Houston by @ericmtztx

I’ve been waiting for this moment a long time. Today, indiegym and 80/20 Jiu-Jitsu enter the next era. We’ve created ā€œIndieā€, an AI agent that works for your gym. Indie can help us lookup critical business info, schedule trials, process cancellations and refunds, email customers, and more. It’s an agent we can delegate work to by simply talking to it. Indie helps dramatically compress the complexity of day-to-day operations for coaches and gym staff. It’s the little things. When there’s a weather disaster and we need to cancel class we can just tell Indie. Someone needs to cancel? We just tell Indie. We wanna schedule a trial for a customer? Just tell Indie. Wanna check on someone’s membership status? Just tell Indie. It’s a radical re-imagination of running a small gym and provides you with a staff member that you can delegate complex tasks to. As an AI agent, Indie can operate autonomously to accomplish user defined goals using whatever tools it has at its disposal.

On the tech side: Indie represents many significant technical feats. Indiegym becomes the first gym management tool to implement the Model Context Protocol specification developed by Anthropic and one of the first Ruby on Rails applications in the tech industry to do so. ā€œIndieā€ is the first Flutter-based MCP client we are aware of. ā€œIndieā€ is one of the first cross-platform agent systems that can run on iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows from a single codebase.

Education: This system represents a culmination of all the ideas from the courses I have developed for UTRGV. The recipe, philosophy, and engineering practices for developing this kind of agent will be taught this week in my AI Engineering course at UTRGV. I will teach students how to design, develop, test, and deploy agentic systems into production.

Healthcare: Agents will play a significant role on the business side of healthcare. Fleets of agents will uncover gaps in care and surface these gaps to clinical teams for immediate intervention. Agents will check for mistakes in documentation and billing to improve care, reduce costs, and increase reimbursements.

I am doing everything I can to realize my vision for the future. by @ericmtztx

Grateful to all my day 1 coaches and training partners. Hindsight is 20/20 and I haven’t expressed my gratitude enough to these gentleman. I started Jiu-Jitsu in 2007 with these guys right here. On my first day, while doing the warmup, I had to run outside and threw up everywhere. But these guys all took me under their wing and toughened me up. Coach @romirodriguez2274 gave me the freedom to learn, teach, and grow. 18 years later I’m happy we can all share the mat together. Sometimes the good old days aren’t just nostalgia—sometimes they really were that good. Proud to still be rolling with the same crew that started it all for me. #paragonrgvbjj by @ericmtztx
