I’M IN SUCH A BAD MOOD.

Actually, I’m in a really freaking good mood because the new @chasebliss Bad Mood pedals were just released! I am particularly jazzed with how the design on this one turned out. I still can’t believe I talked people into going as LOUD as we did, but BAD IS BAD. I’ve been wanting to do some GARISH for a while now and this just seemed like the perfect opportunity. And yeah, I love the grey baby too, even though it is more of a smokey, subtle thing.

For the design of the pedal and of the accompanying graphics, I wanted something felt both shoegaze and dreampop and vaporwave all wrapped into one melted package. I came up a progress of creating digital interference patterns, which felt gooey and noisy and textural in all the right ways.

Oh yeah, we made a new colorway of the Lost + Found too! I’ll always love the original green one, but this new black and skittle-colored one is pretty dang fun, too.

For our new @chasebliss Big Time delay pedal, I wanted the manual and branding to capture a sense of midcentury modernism combined with NASA-style scientific graphics. What better way to represent a SCI FI FUTURE than an illustration of a dramatically angled pedal blasting into hyperspace? As a side note, manually drawing three-point perspective in Illustrator is a very fun and weird exercise! by @ericnyffeler

our “Unsolved Mysteries EP”! And wouldn’t you believe it, it also happens to be Bandcamp Friday! And as if that isn’t cool enough, our label @landlandcolportage is doing a 20% sale with the code “SPRINGSURPRISE” so it’s a happy birthday for everyone!

Recording this EP was such a fun turning point for the band, as it was the first time that we consciously set out to write and record something for a release, rather than the experimental and exploratory process of our first record. We learned a lot about where the sound of Jenny Haniver is moving in the future, and it turns out that it’s heavier and denser than either of us initially expected. Working with @gse on the mixing will do that to your band though… To be completely honest, Scott mix on these songs were so good that we had to entirely rework our live sound to actually try to live up to what he made us sound like.

We also can’t go without again thanking Dan Black and @brettpstenson absolutely crushed the art for the 7” version. We couldn’t be luckier with the artists we get to work with!

Not to end this post with that trite band “big stuff coming soon” bullshit, but the songs for next record are coming along better and weirder than ever. You’ll be seeing some progress on that _soon_…we promise. by @ericnyffeler

Big Time is a pedal that more than lives up to its name. Not only is it one of the deepest and most adventurous delay pedals I’ve ever heard, but the development time was a behemoth. I remember hearing rumblings and rumors about this pedal back when I first started at @chasebliss , so it feels amazing to finally welcome it out into the world! There is a lot to say about this pedal and this will probably be a big post (pun intended).

Big Time is a collaboration between John at @electronicaudioexperiments (ride or die homey if there ever was one) and our entire engineering bench at @chasebliss (@zeteticelectric, @knobs.creative, and @cooper.fx are the original dream team). It’s also the first time that I worked on a pedal for our Automatone line, which was a new and exciting challenge! The first decision we had to make was the enclosure color. Over the years numerous people have hypothesized a black Automatone pedal, so obviously we couldn’t do that! I remember once Joel told me that “he liked to zig when other people zag” and that has always suck with me. We ended up deciding that a dark, warm grey would not only be a perfect fit along side the brushed aluminum of the Preamp MKII and the stark white of the CXM 1978, but would also fit in with the “high end 80s studio gear” that the engineers were inspired by.

My next big design question was “how much design?” Part of the beauty of the Automatone pedals is their bold industrial design. These things look like SERIOUS TOOLS. The last thing I would want to do is smoosh a bunch of graffiti and ruin the vibe. Definitely a case of “less is more.” I ended up taking the red/blue/purple colors of the buttons and subtly integrated that palette across the pedal. A touch of color in the sliders made them come alive and feel instantly fun. I also reworked the button labeling system, bringing the colored circles of the lit-up buttons into the printed labeling, which felt both fun and functional.

Since Big Time is the first Automatone pedal since the rebrand, we also took the opportunity to rework the box and manuals to literally make them more big. I’ll dig into those elements in a later post.

Say hello to the new Habit / say goodbye to the new Habit!

To honor our good friend the @chasebliss Habit passing into the Discontinued Wilderness, we worked up this final limited edition version. Inspired by the wonderful beige and grey computing devices that I grew up with, I wanted this version to feel like most exciting, though woefully pixellated, shareware games of the late 80s/early 90s. Habit is practically a point-and-click adventure game itself, so I’m psyched that it can finally look like it! And hot damn, did @paul_uhl_ ever get the assignment with these photos! by @ericnyffeler

Decided to do a little TLC on @millimetricinstruments bass, including installing a new, gaudier tortoise shell pickguard! Florian even made me a little personalized backplate while he was at it. If you’ve never had to chance to play a Millimetric, I’ve always described them as a piece of midcentury furniture that you could kill someone with. So glad to have this bass back in the rotation! by @ericnyffeler

Put together another poster for the @your.crippling.alcoholism buds for their upcoming European shows! I pulled a lot of inspiration from midcentury Polish avant garde posters because it seemed like a perfect match. If you’re not familiar with the Polish avant garde, do yourself a favor and do some research. Thanks to the buddies @theflenser and @ibart for always making cool shit with me! by @ericnyffeler

I’m super psyched that I got to put this poster together for my buddies @your.crippling.alcoholism and @luxury____skin for an upcoming show in Brooklyn. I’m jealous of anyone who gets to attend! This poster design continues my explorations into pushing my photocopier abuse to its furthest and nastiest reaches. Laid out here is every @chasebliss field guide that we have made since I joined the team back in 2021! It feels pretty amazing to see this design system grow and change but continue to feel inspiring! Consider this your last warning about two of the sickest @jennyhaniverpdx shows of the year! This week we will be flying out to the east coast to play our first ever East coast shows with some of our all time best buddies.

Friday, September 5th we are playing at the greatest guitar store in the world, the legendary @relicmusicshop! We’ll be joined by our oldest buddies @eastofthewall as well as NJ progfathers El Drugstore and @probabilitycloudnj. This show is free and all ages!

On Saturday, September 6th, we will once again be playing with our heroes @haveanicelifeband at @warsawconcerts! As if that wasn’t enough, our friends @mercury_tracer, @inmemoryofthom, and @massivesubsides are also playing. Does @theflenser know how to put together a line up or WHAT?!

If you’ll allow me a brief moment to talk about myself, I wanted to say a lil sumthing about the two posters that I made for these shows. In the last few years, starting right around the pandemic, I found myself almost completely burnt out on the illustration and gigposter style that I had been developing and working in over the last decade. It wasn’t until I joined the team at @chasebliss and started exercising an entirely different set of design muscles that I realized just how badly I had needed a change. I dodged a bullet I didn’t even know was coming! As much as my Chase Bliss duties allow me to explore almost any style I found, I found myself wanting a new voice for music and show poster related stuff. The posters for these two Jenny Haniver shows are a great example of a new direction that I’ve been exploring recently. Imagine 1960s French art film posters that were made by a xerox punk kid. Mixing analog photocopier trash, real letraset, but with design school composition and colors. I’m not sure if that’s what I’m achieving or not, but it’s starting to feel like something new and fun.
