Bird dogs, wild places, and the stories in between.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We trained hard for the NAVHDA Invitational this year, but in the end I made the decision not to run Karl.

I made some mistakes in our preparation, and as we got closer, I just wasn’t confident we had every piece put together well enough to produce the kind of Invitational performance I wanted from him. More importantly, I could see him losing his style and enjoyment in the training. That was a pretty good reminder that I needed to back off.

There are definitely things I would do differently next time — less pressure, more rewards, and probably a little more trust in the dog.

So instead, we went sharp-tail hunting on the prairie.

And Karl reminded me pretty quickly what he does best.

Beautiful points, incredible backs, and covering country in a way I’ve never seen from another Griffon. On our last day he logged 27 miles after already putting in around 60 miles earlier in the week.

He’s an incredibly durable dog and a tremendous bird dog, but more than anything, I’m just really proud to hunt behind him and pretty lucky to share the couch with him at night.

I learned a lot through the process, probably as much about myself as I did about Karl, and we came home doing what we both love most.

Karl’s first litter is here. 5 girls and 3 boys.

After a long day, everyone is healthy, settled in, and mom is doing great. Thankful for a strong mama that did the hard work today.

Big thanks to @coppershotgriffon for this pairing and all the work that goes into bringing a litter into the world.

Karl’s first litter is officially on the way.

Ridenhigh Jackson Brown “Karl” x Coppershots II Iggy
Summer 2026

This one means a lot. Karl has been the real deal on wild birds since his first season, earned a UT Prize I, and has full health clearances and top 10% PennHIP scores. We couldn’t be more excited about this pairing.

Grateful to be working with @coppershotgriffon. Iggy is a beautiful dog, and this is going to be a special group of Griffons.

First Nebraska rooster and I’m convinced they grow them bigger here. Corn-fed for sure. Five relocates and solid points in the CRP from Karl before the flush. This dog never ceases to amaze. Photo by @bird_dog_brice.

There’s something incredible about life with bird dogs. You can study a map, drive into a new mountain range you’ve never stepped foot on… and the moment you drop them on the ground, collars beeping, they go to work. If there are birds, they’ll find them.

I finally get the love for chasing blue grouse—elk country terrain, a flush that explodes through the timber, and birds nearly the size of a pheasant.

Karl was his usual bird-finding machine. Griff locked down the point of the trip on a nine-pack. And Charlie—our newest pup—is already proving she belongs.

Times like this remind me why I love these dogs, and why I’ll never stop following them through the mountains.

And if you haven’t tried Lefty’s—it’s an A+ grouse/pheasant finger mix from the pheasant Dr., Mr. Jason Moore.

201/204 — Karl earned a NAVHDA Utility Prize I! 🏆🐾

This test is one of the toughest for versatile hunting dogs, covering drive, steadiness, retrieving on land and water, the duck search, and overall obedience. Not many dogs make it to this level.

Karl has shown exceptional promise since he was a pup, pointing and hunting hard early on. But instinct alone doesn’t get a near perfect score. Huge thanks to Aleah with @backwaterhuntingdogs for helping guide that drive into Prize 1. She is the real deal and incredible to work with.

I’m beyond proud of this boy and excited for what’s ahead.

📷 @backwaterhuntingdogs and then the dogs and I went to the Sandhills!

Closing out the season strong 💪

These Griffs have truly put it together—Griff at 4.5 years old and the wild child Karl at 2. They’ve handled hundreds of wild birds, nailed countless points and retrieves, and I’m already missing it.

Solo limits over both, and together, they capped it off with another limit on closing day. Karl racked up 78 miles over the long weekend, while Griff put in a solid 45 over a couple of days.

My favorite moment from our final day. Griff locked on point 300 yards to my right, Karl locked on 200 yards to my left—both held.

Proud of these dogs and the season we had. Until next time!

Pheasant Camp 2024 was a blast! I look forward to this trip all year and can’t wait for next year. Great people, dogs, birds, and food. Now, time to hit the hills and start chasing chukar.

First experience with this bird, and it surpassed all expectations. Beautiful terrain, plentiful birds, and amazing dog work. I stayed selective only rewarding the perfect point. We put in a solid morning with Karl covering almost 30 miles, and Griff joined me for an evening hunt. Griff nailed a perfect point, and this solo bomber fell during a picture perfect Wyoming sunset. 🌅 A lot of emotion with this one - they are truly incredible.

Thanks @koshywrites for the intro on habitat selection and hunting this iconic species. by @ericseymour

Limited out and Griff on point. This one startled me as it was close and held tight. Doesn’t get much better.

Griff doing his Griff shimmy🕺🏽 with the first sharptail of the season after a perfect point. He is always so proud of himself and loves to show off his bird. I’m always proud of him too. Anyone else’s bird dog dance around with their prize? ❤️ this pup.
