My trip to Costa Rica in February holds such a special place in my heart. I went to Envision Festival, which is my favorite festival I've ever been to, and I've been to quite a number of festivals at this point. This festival was amazingly aligned in so many ways for me. From the workshops during the day to the incredible music sets at night, the experience was a balance of learning and playing. I was blessed to have so many of my friends at this festival, and I made many new friends while I was there. The @ancientfuturecollective had an epic tent with incredible workshops put on by my Swamp Tribe family. I got to meet my permaculture teachers from @ecoversity, Stephen Brooks and Penny Livingston. I swam in the ocean and explored the rainforest between events and there was an abundance of delicious fresh tropical fruit and warm sunshine. It was a spectacularly beautiful way to transition into spring and I intend on going every year it occurs! taken in Envision Festival, Costa Rica by @ericvanbergen

University of Louisiana at Lafayette is planning on selling the UL Ecology Center, which is the most valuable resource in the area for conserving endangered native plants that are critical to the ecosystem of South Louisiana. No use of this land can be more valuable than it's current use for conservation and education. Selling this land would destroy the integrity of ULL as a university supporting the environment and would be an irreversible setback in conserving Louisiana plants and animals. If the land must be sold, it should be purchased by a conservation organization so that it can continue to serve the incredible purpose of being a safe place for endangered plants and animals.

2025 felt like many lifetimes packed into one year for me. I'm so grateful for the incredible new friendships I've made this year and the amazing places I was able to explore. I began the year living in Baton Rouge in my last semester of landscape architecture school at LSU and finished the year living in Lafayette having started my own ecological landscaping business and working with @boutte_landscapes to restore native plant habitat around south Louisiana. I also have a website now (see link in bio)!

I am looking forward to sharing much more on social media in 2026, as I have so much that I would like to teach and share with my love for ecology. This passion has led me to starting a YouTube/Instagram project called @ecologywitheric. Stay tuned for updates!

I'm so thankful for the support of all of my friends and am excited for the collective healing on our planet this year 🙏💚🌎 by @ericvanbergen

It was an honor to be able to present EcoVision Alliance at the American Society of Landscape Architects conference in New Orleans! I got to share a vision I've been contemplating for how we can best connect native plant experts, horticulturists, and landscape designers to align supply and demand for ecological landscape design projects using the most locally-sourced genetics available. Excited to share more on this in the future! I officially started the account for this movement tagged here: @ecovisionalliance

I’m also very inspired to have been able to connect with and hear the presentations from my fellow game changers!

I was grateful to reconnect with many of my friends from LSU, meet with professionals who have inspired me, and make so many connections with practicing and upcoming landscape designers and related fields throughout the country.

Looking forward to many more ASLA Conferences in the future!

It feels surreal to be in my first August not going back to school. Landscape Architecture school at LSU is easily one of the most beautiful and challenging experiences I've ever had.

My favorite part of it was becoming so close to my classmates. From staying up until sunrise working on our studio projects to traveling the country together, we shared so much time learning and growing together. It was amazing to watch how much our work had improved over 5 years.

The workload we faced together was more than just challenging. Sometimes it felt completely unreasonable. There were moments I had felt so overwhelmed by the amount of time I needed to devote to my projects that I considered dropping out. But I'm grateful that I did my best and didn't give up. Through such a rigorous course load, I learned how capable I am to take on massive projects. I also learned what it feels like to push too hard to the point of burnout. I learned how to take care of myself and how to hold a more zoomed-out perspective of what really matters when I get lost in pushing myself too hard.

I even had many classmates help me design, build, and take care of our two pollinator gardens that I initiated on LSU campus during some of the busiest times of the school year 🌾🌼🦋

Landscape architects are truly some of the coolest people you'll meet, and I'm excited for all of the work I'll be doing with them in future!

I plan on sharing some of my school projects here on Instagram soon so stay tuned! taken in LSU Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture by @ericvanbergen

Working non-stop on finishing school has me nostalgic for the festivals last year. I am grateful that music festivals provide a taste of what is possible in the human experience when we come together outside and celebrate the beauty of art and the joy of being alive!

I've found myself losing touch with these gifts as I've been investing so much time into computer work for landscape architecture. I chose landscape architecture as a degree because I want to design a better world. A world where people come together in outdoor community spaces. A world where we are invested in the land and take care of it. It's so easy to lose touch with what this human experience means when our schedules lack connection with the outdoors. Many times we go from screens inside our homes to screens at school/work and then back to screens at our homes. This lifestyle is not sustainable for our souls.

I am excited to live in more alignment every day for creating a better future, a more outdoor and community-centered lifestyle as we have been designed to live 🌎 by @ericvanbergen

Railroad and powerline right-of-ways around southwest Louisiana are the perfect locations to restore critically endangered coastal prairie grasses and wildflowers. This is a preview of some work for my LSU landscape architecture capstone project. I am analyzing the potential for right-of-way parcels of land throughout the Louisiana coastal prairie region and determining which parcels are most suitable for restoration based on their connective potential to existing restorations and prairie remnants as well as their ability to educate people who live near and visit them. The goal is to imagine how right-of-ways strips of land can serve as habitat corridors for plants and animals to move across the landscape in this heavily fragmented ecosystem.

Of all of the gardens I have created, the Ascension Episcopal School pollinator garden has been my favorite by far. It is difficult for me to accept that the school does not believe they can invest in keeping the garden and that the garden is being removed, but I am grateful for the opportunity to have learned so much from it since its installation in 2019.

Starting as an ecological desert of a non-native lawn, the Ascension garden has become one of the most biodiverse gardens I have ever seen. It features over 50 different species of native grasses and wildflowers, many of which are of endangered local genetics. It has provided habitat for hundreds of insect species and I've even seen resident green anoles, tree frogs, and mice living within it. The garden is full of new surprises every month with new flowers blooming and new colors and textures that match the season. Having gardens like this one is so important for protecting our planet’s biodiversity and connecting people to nature. I don't think I'll ever understand why this garden is being removed, but I hope that its example inspires future gardens for schools to build and celebrate as educational tools and sanctuaries for both people and wildlife!

I am grateful beyond words for all of the members of the Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society and the AES community that made this garden possible. I am especially grateful to Steve Nevitt for his dedication to this project and commitment to helping me maintain it over the years. And I also must thank Gerald Sierveld, my photography teacher who gave me the courage and support to dream big about what was possible for Ascension Episcopal School. I’d lastly like to thank Phyllis Griffard and the Acadiana Native Plant Project for helping ensure the plants of the garden are relocated to safe new homes. May we protect the wonderful plants and animals that we share this planet with 🙏🌎 taken in Ascension Episcopal School - Upper School Campus by @ericvanbergen
