Four years ago, I made the best decision of my life. I chose to attend Norfolk State University, even though I had never visited Virginia or known a single soul here. I truly believe God placed me here for a reason. Unknowingly, Norfolk, Virginia became my second home, and I built my own family here. Reflecting on all of the connections and bonds I’ve made here, I couldn’t see myself anywhere else.

Thank you, Norfolk State University, for seeing the future in me, and thank you to every person who lifted me up and offered wisdom. Every encounter and every memory led to this moment.

Three summer internships and 10+ conferences across the nation later, you can address me as a Norfolk State University Alumna.

First things first, thank you to my 22. I stand here today because they came together and decided to break barriers and support our community in a nation that wasn’t built for us. We all know becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is every woman’s dream, and I am so grateful that my dream became reality. To be surrounded by women who not only exceed expectations but set standards is truly a blessing.

To ΕΘ,

The chapter that consistently works and always wins. Y’all taught me what grit really looks like. Even when the odds were stacked against us, y’all taught us to show up and push through. Thank you for pushing me to be better, even when I didn’t realize I needed it. Your support, inside and outside of Delta, shaped me into the woman I am today, and I don’t take that lightly. To EA specifically, trusting me and my sisters to uphold this legacy meant everything. Thank you for seeing something in me before I fully saw it in myself.

To TD,

Sisters, I love you all dearly. You all have become a big part of my collegiate journey, and I will cherish every laugh, every tear, every prayer, and every argument. Y’all have seen every version of me and never made me feel like it was too much. I came in with my guard all the way up, but y’all softened my heart. Being surrounded by an amazing group of women pushes me to be better every day. I have genuinely learned something from each of you. I’m so proud of us as we continue to achieve in school and in our careers. Here’s to more memories, success, and sisterhood

Upon graduating, I’ll be joining the 4% of Black women in construction. Everything Delta has poured into me, I’m taking with me. I will keep opening doors and leaving them open for whoever comes next. Mark my words, I will be a trailblazer in this industry. taken in Norfolk State University by @erikaaa.ic

Leadership is the ability to influence, inspire, and guide others toward a common goal, and I held every position I was given with passion, intention, and purpose.

Since freshman year at Norfolk State, I wanted to leave a lasting impression of a strong, kind, and determined leader who always got things done. I used to joke that one day there would be a building named after me. I came in with a vision to leave a legacy and impact, and I never lost sight of that.

There were long nights and days that never seemed to end. Times I doubted myself and thought I couldn’t get it done, but I persevered. These positions not only pushed me to my limits but held me accountable because I knew people were counting on me. I could not afford to quit, slow down, or lose focus. It made me who I am today, resilient, adaptable, and open-minded.

Thank you to God, my family, friends, support system and everyone who worked alongside me. A very special shoutout to the organizations that shaped me. Collegiate Midnight Golf taught me how to lead and navigate working with family. National Association of Home Builders taught me how to stay consistent even when I didn’t know what to do myself. Associated Builders and Contractors showed me how to utilize my network in ways I never thought possible. Student Government Association challenged me the most, where we worked tirelessly to serve and advocate for the entire student body, and leading at that level pushed me in ways I never expected, because serving the entire student body was bigger than me and I grew into it.

I came in wanting to leave a legacy, and I am walking away knowing I did exactly that. taken in Norfolk State University by @erikaaa.ic
