Costa Brava, Spain — While the sunset color is beautiful it comes at a cost. This week, a wildfire in the Les Gavarres massif burned more than 2,000 hectares after spreading rapidly in strong Tramuntana winds. The smoke here is palpable. Authorities believe the fire was accidentally ignited by sparks from an angle grinder during a hot and windy day. Thousands of residents were temporarily confined while hundreds of firefighters, supported by aircraft, emergency crews, local farmers, and volunteers, worked to contain the blaze before it reached more populated coastal areas. Another reminder of climate change and that the Mediterranean like other locations in the summers are increasingly defined by the growing challenge climate change: extreme heat, winds and wildfire.

Picking back up the camera in my neighborhood…

« Gentryfication is a play on my last name and an acknowledgment of my own complex role within the ongoing transformation of West Oakland. Off and on since 1999 I have lived in this neighborhood, witnessing visible marks of gentrification unfold at street level. I have observed how speculation, capital, municipal policy, and cultural displacement have shaped the physical and emotional landscape of this historically Black community.

In 2025, after returning once again and purchasing a condo in a 1903 duplex on West Street, I am photographing the neighborhood with renewed focus.

Outside forces have repeatedly reshaped West Oakland: the terminus of the transcontinental railroad in the latter mid-19th Century, the rise of wartime industry, the construction of freeways, urban renewal, BART expansion, redlining, disinvestment, and, later, the pressures of tech-driven real estate cycles.

The 1989 earthquake — which destroyed the double-deck Cypress structure — was a major turning point. Its collapse physically reopened the neighborhood, removed a barrier that had isolated West Oakland for decades, and set the stage for both renewed investment and speculative attention long before the current wave of gentrification. »

Pausing to remember I am fortunate. Here’s a peek inside the oriffice! Glad to be surrounded by dedicated and creative people committed to a haven for learning and expression in these times. We strive to focus on creating a safe and helpful environment. I value this community especially now - when we are challenged to stay sane. It was a good day hosting Kirk Amyx @kirkamyx from Sierra College who is also a #ccsfphoto alumn and will have a Fall ‘26 show here in the Obscura gallery! Also I was his digitech/assistant in Y2K!! We have a great team and I’m thankful today for @kariorviktintypes who snapped this and filled in for us - @sarah.christianson artist and gallery manager extraordinaire installing a new show opening next week in Gallery Obscura. @liamisavisualartist host of this semester’s Ph52 public lecture with @lupinehammack tonight. “Allez”, 2014-Present
Archival Pigment Prints

This photographic project explores the fleeting experience of the voyage as seen out the window. Made in France, it takes as its starting point the photographic motion studies of Marey and Muybridge and writer Rebecca Solnit’s notion that the work coincided with passenger experience. According to Solnit, the persistence of vision held these motion studies responsible for confluences of art and science. Travel by train allowed Victorians to see the world passing before them in constant motion. “Allez” continues this conversation through its contemporary street photographs of Paris.

The series attempts to explore the technological influences on contemporary photography through the use of small mobile cameras. While sharing public spaces, the subjects appear fragmented and disconnected. Constantly in motion – a lack of engagement and being present with one another is evident. The photographer too is alone but together with passengers, acting as a voyeur making long continuous and un-manipulated exposures while in constant moving transit.
