CCSFer Luka Nussbaumer took on the extra-credit challenge in "PHOT 50A: History & Aesthetics of Photography Pre-1945" with Prof. @erikagentry_projects and turned a room into a camera obscura using Amazon boxes, tape, and a tiny hole.

A camera obscura forms when light passes through a small opening into a dark space, projecting an upside-down, reversed image onto the opposite surface. The phenomenon has been studied for more than 2,000 years, from ancient Chinese and Greek thinkers to Ibn al-Haytham, who explained its optics in the 11th century. By the Renaissance, artists used camera obscuras to study light and perspective—and the same basic principle later became central to photography.

Sometimes all you need to understand photography is light, darkness, and a hole in a box.

PHOT 50A explores photography from its invention through 1945, including major photographers, processes, and aesthetic movements.

🌅 What a truly lovely evening shared with our resident artists as we welcomed Australian author and podcaster @_sarahwilson_, now living in Paris!

🌄 As the last rays of sun slipped behind the Alpilles mountains, we gathered by the pool, surrounded by lush gardens in full bloom, and enjoyed a divine apéro of juicy melon, salamis, pâté de campagne, caperberries, and spicy roasted nuts. 🌰

🌿 Dinner was a celebration of summer’s bounty, served beneath the pergola and wrapped in wild, tumbling foliage.

🍅We shared a hearty, rustic eggplant parmigiana, accompanied by vibrant salads of sun-ripened tomatoes with creamy mozzarella, and a classic Italian salad; each dressed with the finest local olive oil and aged balsamic. 🥗

🧀 We ended with a glorious seasonal cheese and fruit platter—peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries, and perfectly drippy Chaource and Saint-Félicien—followed by the very last of the Turkish delight, saved for just such a special night. 🍒

A magical Provençal summer evening! ✨

on a swirly stormy saturating sunday, i wandered around a wonderland of creativity and inspiration and masterpieces at CODEX IX put on by @codexfoundation . @tomiko_jones flew in special from her far away home ❤️ and i joined her and @erikagentry_projects in catching up with friends, admiring exceptionally crafted books and paper, and talking process with photographers, book crafters, AI dabblers, paper dyers, photograveurs, and other wildly interesting folk. of note was that it was held in the oakland convention center which has not been regularly used for a couple of decades, and looks like it will be holding more cultural events in the future.
