We’re happy to announce that we’re renting out our lovely second home! Our small year-round cottage near Aegviidu is looking for a tenant for the winter season. The house is located in the middle of nature, right next to the Kõrvemaa hiking trails and lit cross-country skiing tracks, while still being only a 30-minute drive from Tallinn. 🌲

The house has everything you need for living – high-speed internet via fiber optics, a work chair and desk suitable for remote work, a TV, and a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, oven, microwave, stove, and countertop. The house is heated by a remotely controlled, energy-efficient air source heat pump, and the bathroom has underfloor heating. The 29m² house has two bedrooms (one is small – a child’s room), a living room, and a loft. It’s a cozy space for one or two people, but we’ve also managed just fine there with kids. Surrounding the house is a large terrace, perfect for eating, relaxing, or grilling on nice days. The house faces south in such a way that during the darker autumn days, any available sunshine will shine right into the house.

The 2-hectare plot borders the beautiful Soodla River – the cleanest river in Northern Estonia. On the riverbank, there’s a private small sandy beach, and it’s possible to rent a sauna trailer (€150 per weekend, delivery included). For children, the property has a sandbox, trampoline, and mud kitchen. There’s also a lockable shed available.

I personally think of this house as a “writer’s cabin” – a perfect retreat from city life, ideal for drawing inspiration from nature and focusing on bringing important ideas to life. But of course, it can be used in many other ways too.

This is probably the scariest thing I’ve done…

We just bought our own plot of land - 2,1ha riverside land in Anija, Harjumaa (30min ride from Tallinn).

We must be crazy - why would we buy an empty plot of land if we could instead, for example, buy a small apartment that increases in value (faster) and could bring in steady rental income?

That would have been the rational thing to do.

Moneywise.

But what about time? Where do I want to spend my after-hours for the next 5-10 years - flipping a rental apartment for others (tenants) or would I rather spend that time building my (future) home, spending time in nature (landscaping) with my family? Time has a different meaning when you have kids.

The decision would certainly have been different if I would still be in my twenties.

Buying that particular plot might have come about 2 years too early, yet these opportunities are rare to come by and when all of the dozens of small pieces come together (I wasn’t sure this is going to happen until the very last moment) - it’s better to take that opportunity, rather than risk regretting it later.

Good things come at a cost - no traveling, no unnecessary shopping, no excess spending, and very tight budgeting for the next couple of years ahead. Pausing all other savings. All extra time and most weekends will probably be spent here.

Is it really worth it? Can we do it? Honestly, I don’t know! But we’ll give our very best trying.

For us, but perhaps even more so, for her.

So you travelled 15,000km to work in a cubicle?
Yes! Here’s what my typical work day looks like in Bali:

8.00 Slow breakfast with family and a dip in a pool.
9.00 Heading off with my ‘motorbike’ to take Emma to kindergarten. It is 50meters from the office.
9.30 Starting my work day at a coworking place - a simple cubicle with an AC and a stable internet.
9.30-12/13 focused work. This is the cornerstone of my day - I can do deep-focus work or anything else important. This is possible as I don’t get any interruptions during that time - no calls, no emails, or Teams messages. All of my colleagues are sleeping. This time has been pivotal for me - I have managed to complete all of those non-urgent “ideas” that have been sitting in my to-do list for months. Or if a new deadline is coming up, I can do my part of the work before the rest of the team wakes up.
12/13, I take a longer lunch (around an hour) to compensate for a longer work day and get energised for the late afternoon meetings. Sometimes I take a walk, once a week I go to play Paddle (100m from the office). I spend 4-5€ for a delicious lunch with a perfect cappuccino @colabocafe.bali (20m from the office).
13/14 Final preparations for the upcoming (Estonian) workday and meetings.
14.00 First sleepy replies to my Teams messages emerge (8.00 in Estonia).
15.00 (9.00 in Estonia) stand-up meeting and the start of the meetings sprint.
15-17/18 (until noon, 12.00 in Estonia) - meetings. Even if meetings sometimes finish early, I keep myself available and on the work vibe until 18/19.
18/19-… EOD. Offline, focused family time - dinner, pool, and others.

I work 4 days a week and enjoy Bali for 3 days a week. Thanks to my focused work days, I can achieve my weekly tasks and goals within 4 days.

So indeed, I travelled 15,000 km to work in a cubicle to do the same work as I do in Estonia. However, the lifestyle and quality of both my work and my personal life (work-life balance) are so much better. And of course, the stable ~30c weather also helps make a dent :) by @erikehasoo
