Latest collage, “Verve, Spring 1938 “ or “I remember the hot part very well.” (48ish x 17ish), is made entirely from the contents of the Spring, 1938 issue of the French magazine Verve. The magazine is impossibly beautiful, with words by names like Joyce, Hemingway, and Suarès, and illustrations by artists like Kandinsky, Braque, Masson, Bosch, and Giotto. And while it has religious tones, the piece is also sacreligious, because I chopped their work all up along with the translucent tissue guards (turned em into smoke) and Frankensteined together something new. As with all these collages, it’s my attempt to rescue and recontextualize memorable words and images from out-of-print sources before they disappear entirely. (Shout out to @lucy.suess for selling me on the skeleton.) by @erikrydholm

Latest collage “I don’t know what it meant” (14 1/2” x 14 1/2”) is pieced together entirely from torn or cut pieces of the summer, 1954 issue of Gentry Magazine, a short-lived but lovingly-styled quarterly men’s magazine that existed for six years before going kaput in 1957. As with all these collages, it’s my attempt to rescue and recontextualize memorable images from out-of-print sources before they disappear entirely. by @erikrydholm

Newest collage: “you asked for it… here it is!” 40” x 65”. My sister @kristinrydholm sent me some issues of Arts & Architecture magazine originally published in 1953. Slim imagery, mostly black and white text. I started slicing them up and laying down strips upon strips - 50,000? More? Enough to make me eccentric, that’s for sure. Currently exhibiting in my living room. by @erikrydholm

Some things I loved creating/designing in 2025. The elephant collage made the small works show @440gallery. The ballet colllage was a commission from @joannablattberg. The squiggle door was a collab with the ever-game @lucy.suess, who also inspired the sleeping dog collage and improved others. The shelves would not have happened without @paulinecamille and @arcana.work. The waterfalll Whitney promo came from a class with @kellianderson. The steeple may never happen. The final collage remains in progress and would not exist without the generosity of @kristinrydholm. Onward to 2026! by @erikrydholm

My elephant collage has been selected for @440gallery’s 21st annual Small Works Show. Opening reception is Saturday, 11/15 from 4-6pm. I’ll be there so come by! And if you can’t, it’ll be up at the gallery from 11/13-12/19. Or on the wall of my kitchen after that… by @erikrydholm

Commission for @joannablattberg from a 1954 issue of Ballet Magazine that belonged to her grandmother. 34 x 25 x 4, moving dancers on black thread attached to a brass handle, boxed in UV acrylic. I loved making this for you, J. by @erikrydholm

New collage featuring an illustration by Ukrainian-French artist Nathalie Parain. She passed in 1958 and most of her work is out of print, but the sleeping dog is hers and I sourced the midnight blue from her classic Ribambelles. This one is a gift to @lucy.suess, who suggested not letting this sleeping dog lie. by @erikrydholm

Latest lunacy involving illustrations by Ukrainian-French artist Nathalie Parain. I liked her big elephant and wanted to put it in the middle of a collage of geometric abstraction, but soon myself creating a scenic, the pachyderm celebrating its liberated life in a river of pieced-together beach balls. As with all the collages in this series, every element was scissored from the pages of her out-of-print books themselves. I feel like the target demo for this one skews toddler. by @erikrydholm

Latest collage in a series that recontextualizes illustrations by the late Ukrainian-French artist Nathalie Parain. She drew the geese, I made the meadow, etc. Everything is scrapped from the books that contained the illustrations. 15x15. by @erikrydholm

Latest (last?) in a series of collages based on the illustrations of Nathalie Parain. This one combines two fishes she created with the remnants of one of her books that I’d hollowed out while scavenging for materials for the series. I liked how the leftover portion of the back cover kinda looked like the ocean, (moreso after I repeatedly scored it with a box cutter). Swipe to see the front cover, which is now the backside of the collage. by @erikrydholm
