This design will be available as a poster, T-shirt, perhaps even some stickers?! You'll have to come to find out! It will be a blast!! 👽😺🎃

No AI was used in the creation of this design, it was all drawn by my little monkey paws. by @erin.bread

When my Meemaw passed last year, I had to take a big break from projects outside of work.

My brain was totally broken. I hear very little about the cognitive effects of grief, but I struggled to balance what was on my plate for months after her death. I suddenly felt like I had a million spinning plates and no mental capacity to handle it all.

I started saying no, which felt like a foreign word in my mouth. I quit my part-time contract job, I stopped taking commissions. I cut back on volunteering. I quietly wrapped up whatever was in front of me and shut down.

I switched gears, started prioritizing my physical and mental health. I took hot yoga classes several times a week just to have a safe place to cry in the dark where no one noticed.

Slowly, as the seasons changed, I started feeling better, crying less, and feeling more like myself. Several months ago I finally started working on some new stuff, experimenting with woodworking, resin, patterns and colors, all my favorite things.

I guess it's no surprise that this is the first thing I have created in a long time that I absolutely love. When I say I put my literal tears into this painting, I am not being dramatic. I loved staring into my grandmother's eyes every night while I worked on this.

This is how I see her; big, bold, beautiful, elegant, a glossy class act, timeless in her own way. I'm so excited to make art again, and even happier that it is my Meemaw who kicked off my spark. I miss her so much, this is the best way I know how to honor her.

Love you, Meems.

When I was asked to participate in Plaza Walls this year it was a no-brainer. Duh, of course I want to go to adult art camp, make new artist friends and party with them. Obviously.

But I almost dropped out because as many of you know by now, my mom was diagnosed with a glioblastoma on September 10th. She had brain surgery a week later, and I was supposed to start painting a few days later.

I didn't think I could do it, I wasn't even sure I could exist in public because the first few days after finding this out I could barely get off the floor. But before her operation when she was still lucid she said don't "drop out on account of me." But of course, she would say that wouldn't she.

I weighed my options. The design was done, the paint was mixed, all that was left was the application. If I pulled out now, one week before painting begins, I would put the Plaza Walls crew in a tough spot, and whatever artist they replaced me with in a tough spot too. After several days to mull it over I decided to rely on my friends and community.

I called up the ultimate homie @creekgoblin_ for help, who wrangled in another solid one @jac.of.too.many.trades and in spite of it all we managed to knock out the bulk of it in a record time of three days.

Without a doubt it's my favorite mural I've ever done, not only because I love the design and I experimented for the first time with spray and even making my own stippling brush, but because it was my community who really saw this through to the end. Heidi, Jac, and everyone else who helped me, I really could not have done this without you. And by "this" I don't mean my mural I mean THIS *gestures broadly*

This mural, aptly titled "Danger," is done, but my mother's journey is only just beginning as she recovers from her surgery and faces life with a terminal brain cancer. Thank you everyone for all the kind words, all the reminders to eat and hydrate, and for so many things I can't put into words. Community is really everything, and while I'm sad I couldn't participate in Plaza Walls the way I really wanted to, I'm still so very grateful to be included and meet the people I did.

I can't say it enough, thank you.

Danger!

My Plaza Walls 2026 mural.

Designed by me, with assistance from Heidi and Jac. A testament to community, perseverance, and smiling through the pain, even when you feel like you're being hunted by tigers.

Haven't posted a process video in forever so here we go, the making of my spray can design for the Plaza Walls fundraiser show at DNA a few months ago!

I still have a few of these bad boys left, buy one before my cat destroys them (the poms* on top infuriate her).

*No bunnies were harmed in the making of these taken in Plaza Walls by @erin.bread

Before I tell my tale, I want you to close your eyes.

Envision the most evil George you can think of. Hold that image in your mind. Now open your eyes.

Is THIS what you saw?

Because this George tried to ruin my life, and the lives of many others. Come with me on a journey.

The year was 2017. I was living in a first-floor apartment off 10th and Pearl in the Cap Hill neighborhood of downtown Denver. Me and my longterm boyfriend shared a one-bedroom in a charmingly dilapidated building. It wasn’t the best kept place, but we could afford it and it was close to work.

Now, in Denver, a lot of buildings don’t have centralized air conditioning, our apartment among them. I know it’s hard to imagine here in OKC, especially today, but the seasons there have very defined edges, and it’s so dry that usually a strong fan will suffice.

To catch a cool breeze, we always left our window open at night. Our cat Boo also liked to take advantage of the cracked window to come and go as he pleased. He had always been an adventurous indoor/outdoor cat.

One hot summer night around 3 a.m., I woke up to a hissing sound. I turned on the light and was bewildered to see what looked like two Boos hissing at each other by the cat food bowl. I thought I was hallucinating or having a weird dream until I realized another cat—who looked strikingly similar to my own—had broken in through the open window and was eating Boo’s food.

I shoo’d the cat out and shut the window. Weird, but I’ve seen weirder. I went back to bed.

A few days later, while getting ready for work, I saw that same cat hop onto the windowsill and attempt to break in again.

This time I noticed he had a collar. His tag said George and had a phone number.

I texted the number on the tag to let the owner know her cat was breaking into my apartment and to see if he was missing. She responded immediately and ominously: “Oh no… he’s chosen you.”

George was not missing. His owner lived a block away, but apparently he had a long history of breaking and entering.

At first, it was amusing. George started a routine of sneaking in for a midnight snack, and George’s owner and I became texting buddies. I could tell she felt terrible taken in Denver, Colorado by @erin.bread

I wrote and illustrated a silly little story about the worst cat I've ever met that I got to present at the PowerPoint Party at Bookish tonight. Such a cool concept for an event! Thanks again for the opportunity, it was a lot of fun! Can't wait for the next one 😸 taken in Bookish: Used Books and Art by @erin.bread

Ever meet someone you immediately despise? Well me too, except it wasn't what you'd expect.

Come to Bookish this Saturday to see me tell the very strange tail (haha) of George (derogative) at the PowerPoint Party, hosted by Pantheon Press

I go on at 4:45! See you there! taken in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma by @erin.bread

To celebrate DNA's 18th birthday, I thought about where I was at when I was 18. At that age I was just a ska-loving kid who drew a lot of reptiles and wanted to be a tattoo artist, but unfortunately lived in a state where tattooing was still illegal (Oklahoma was the last state to legalize in 2006).

Come see this piece along with my spray can designs and many other talented artists this Thursday at DNA!! See you there!! 🐍🍞👽 taken in DNA Galleries by @erin.bread
