My sewing studio, the place where anything I imagine can come to life. I’ve been thinking about this little business a lot this summer. I find myself asking questions like: What’s the next thing? What direction am I even going in? Should I be doing more? Are jackets going to be the only thing you design inbetween client jobs? Why don’t you photograph your work more so you can share the process? How come you never open up about your professional background and how you came to do what you do? It is equally exhausting and the most rewarding to work for yourself and when I feel conflicted by these thoughts, it’s then I realize none of the above matters. Don’t think too much, just focus on the work as if one would before the online community came to be. Focus on the real community. There is nothng I love more than meeting and working with people in person.

Make an appointment and come by the studio in Barrio Viejo- let’s create something beautiful together. Whether it’s a custom design, restoring a vintage piece and giving it a new life, or simply achieving the perfect fit. Every and any piece can always be perfectly tailored to you.

Alongside my collections of custom jackets and linen robes, I specialize in custom wedding gowns, men’s suit tailoring, and custom-fit alterations. And soon, I’ll be looking forward to executing a brand new collection of jackets that will be debuted this fall/winter. And to my fellow community whether it be in the ol’ pueblo or online, thank you always for the continued support. 🦢 taken in Barrio Viejo by @erin_._cox

Her Ritual: Erin Cox @erin_._cox

This feature is first in a series of interviews with women we admire, giving a window into their everyday rituals. (Lifestyle voyeurs, delight!)

🍊 the orange trees in her front yard are so fragrant, certain times of year, they perfume her whole block in barrio viejo.

👯‍♀️ she’s one of those women who introduces you to other women, and before you know it they’re your friends too.

🌵 she has an encyclopedic knowledge of tucson. a city she’s proud to call home, and one she’s helped shape.

🪡 i know her best as a tailor and fashion designer. her studio is full of fabric and art and treasures collected over the years. everything she touches becomes something else: fabric, food, a home, a handmade birthday card. all of it art in her hands.

🦀 she’s a double cancer, which means she can go deep with you in minutes. one conversation in and you’d swear you’ve known her for years. wisdom and whimsy in the same breath. she laughs easily. she knows her boundaries. she pays attention like it’s a practice.

🌊 this is a woman who lives into rituals not as rigid routines, but as a way of moving through a day to feel her best mentally, physically and creatively. we could all learn something from how erin does it.

50 excursions around the sun spent in the Land of Enchantment to attend opening night of Madama Butterfly at the Santa Fe Opera (a long awaited dream). There is nothing like watching opera be accompanied by the sun going down- a rare moment I am no stranger to and it felt like coming home. The greatest gift was relaxation- it’s been a long year, a long life. When you approach half of your life you really start to have a lot of thoughts and many flashbacks, the people who’ve come and gone and things you did as a child, conversations that were had and what life was like when it was purely analog. When I was in my early 20s and working my very last corporate job. I had to go through a training program for a computer software program. I didn’t pass the final twice and my boss said, “Erin, you’ve got to pass, you have to learn this, if you don’t you will never get by in the real world”. I felt so defeated and cried all night, at 21 years old I told myself, “He’s right, I am never going to get by in the real world”. And then I woke up the next day (figuratively and literally), immediately quit my job and hit the pavement of 4th Avenue, got a job at Tucson Thrift Shop and it changed my life forever, it truly saved me. I always say, “I grew up on 4th Avenue”. It led me to too many great chapters to name, but the most important was working in opera and then really learning opera. I guess I am realizing that I can live this life exactly how I want to and nothing is going to influence the direction, I’ve already been doing it for 50 years. AI will never change how I move or learn in the world- I never conformed when I was becoming an adult and I surely am more stubborn now. Perhaps that has been the greatest gift- not giving in to status seeking, material possessions, social pressure… I have always believed you are exactly where you need to be, and it has been nothing short of a very full, beautiful, and happy life.

We might just get it.

This was a sweet moment of peace I had over the weekend. It’s just been such a hard couple of weeks. I’m no piano player, but when I started playing a song I probably haven’t played since I was a kid, the memory came back to me and it was the most peace I’d felt in a long time.

Barbara Zelano was one of my biggest cheerleaders in my life and in my art and this past Friday night spent with some of my oldest and dearest friends to remember her meant everything. Anyone who knew her was lucky. May she always be a ribbon in the sky in every sunset and sunrise.

Spring Series
Still falling in love with the mystery that is this strange paradise. This desert and its people, it just doesn’t exist anywhere else, or so I’ve been told. I’ve also been told it’s going to be a very wet and tropical summer, it would only make sense for this cancer baby closing in on half a century. taken in The Sonoran Desert by @erin_._cox
