Another one of my favorite trips from last season was with one of our regulars, Clint. He fishes the islands with us a couple times a year, and finally decided to give an offshore trip a shot.

At one point in the morning it was looking bleak. It was foggy and rainy and we couldn’t see more than 100 yards, let alone use the gyros. We drove around slow with the trollers out hoping to get lucky and just run something over to no avail.

Eventually the weather cleared and it turned into a gorgeous day. @trevorm47 started glassing up some birds and we were in the game. It took a few stops but finally one school stuck to the boat and we put limits of bluefin on the boat in short order.

So we started heading south to try to find a mahi kelp. We picked up 1 off an open water school but they didn’t stick around so we kept moving.

A bit later @trevorm47 says ‘I think I see a surface sword… no a marlin.’

We toss some baits at it but it sank out - but popped back up a 100 yards away or so. We put some baits out and I tried to swing wide and drag them right by it’s face.

It worked, and Clint was tight on 40#. We fought this thing for well over an hour chasing it down multiple times, and eventually got it to the boat.

They wanted to release it, so we kicked the boat into gear at 2 knots to give it some oxygen and it swam away.

The third pic is a yellowtail Clint somehow managed to land earlier in the year at the islands, on a spinning reel, with 20#, in 60’ of water, surrounded by sea lions. He wins luckiest angler last year for sure.

Been thinking about last season and wanted to post a few of my favorite trips. Starting with this epic one in May. It’s a bit of a long story but it’s worth it.

It was the first offshore trip of the year. Hit up the contacts the day before and got some coordinates and noticed they were all pretty much in a straight line, and knew everyone would be heading directly there in the morning.

There was some decent kelp yellowtail around then, and our customers just wanted to catch some fish and didn’t need to focus on just catching tuna. So I decided to run a little south first to try to find a untouched kelp and get some fish on the boat first before heading to the tuna zone. Early season bluefin are so fickle, even if you find them doesn’t mean that they’ll bite - and the yellows were a lot more guaranteed.

First thing in the morning @trevorm47 glasses up a nice kelp and tells me ‘oh yeah there’s fish on it I see them puddling.’

We started catching yellows right away and then hook something that takes a much stronger run. A few mins later a nice 25# bluefin hits the deck.

We throw out a couple sardines and start slow trolling back up to the kelp for another drift. I happen to turn around at just the right moment to see a huge explosion on one of the baits. This was clearly not a yellowtail, and after a good battle we boat a ~45# bft. When we finally decided to move on we had limits of yellowtail for our two guys with a handful of crew fish along with the two tuna.

This could have been the end of the day and it would have been a great trip, but as it was not even 9am I decide to go looking south to prospect for future trips.

We put out a couple madmacs and it doesn’t take long for me to see some very large splashes. Trevor was in the gyros and I point it out to him and say ‘that must be dolphin, right?’

‘No, thats fish, 100%.’

These were big boys, looked like 100# class. Given we had mainly our single speed reels ready to go I try to just swing the madmacs through them.

Checked one off the bucket list last week - first ono/wahoo on the spear! Thank you to @lionsdenfreediving for the opportunity. Look him up if you’re ever in Maui and are looking to go spearfishing. taken in Maalea Harbor, Maui, Hi by @erniegorham

Caught a few largemouth this year. Biggest were 7.9 and 7.5 on a Texas rigged @yamamoto_fishing swim senko and a big @evergreen__usa top water. Also got on a fun @working.class.zero citizen bite one morning and had 6 fish on it up to 4.9#s. Hopefully catch a few more before it’s time to focus on saltwater! by @erniegorham

Ran a 50k this weekend! Hardest thing I’ve ever done physically for sure. Felt strong the first 20+ miles but the big downhill section absolutely wrecked me. Missed my goal time by like 80 minutes but the surprise extra 3 miles and 1k of vert certainly didn’t help. Should have trained more, especially on hilly terrain, but there’s always next time.

Shout out to my badass friends @katherinegoesplaces @laurel_martin @tyler_yezman for getting me to sign up for this and keeping me motivated to train.

Hopped in the @wonbass Lake Havasu open as a AAA and somehow ended up getting 2nd place!

I definitely got lucky with the pros that I drew. They were all super cool and knew how to catch ‘em. Each day I was able to contribute with at least 1 fish that we weighed in.

Day 1 I had a pretty epic net-man moment when my pro’s fish jumped next to the boat, spit his lure, and I somehow managed to reach and just barely catch it in the net. It was a 4.9 pound smallie and our biggest fish of the day.

Day 1 I also made my only consequential mistake by not retying after catching a tiny fish. Shortly after I hooked the biggest fish I hooked all week and it took me in the rocks and broke my line. If that fish was a 2 pound cull it would have gotten me the win and a big fish check. Oh well.

Congratulations to my day 2 pro Jeff Rutt on his 7th place finish!

Day 3 I had an absolute blast with @zackhayes_03 . He trusted his gut and called an audible in the morning, and it paid off. We were just 1 big bite away from getting me the W but it just didn’t happen. He is a stick though and will definitely win one of these eventually, it’s just a matter of time.

Thanks to Billy, Teresa, and everyone else at @wonbass . I’ve wanted to fish one of these for years and it lived up to the expectations. Very well run tournament. I’ll be back! taken in Lake Havasu City, Arizona by @erniegorham

Got lucky this weekend and caught an absolute freak of a largemouth bass. The scale read between 12.19 and 12.25 and I got it on a 4 inch @redrumbaits paddletail fished on a lead head!

I wish I had better photos and a proper length/girth measurement on her - but fishing solo from the bank I didn’t have many options. (Yes I’m ordering a @working.class.zero travel measuring board for the future).

I normally don’t catch fish this big and it doesn’t matter…

I tried to lay my rod next to it to get a length later, but with the rocks I couldn’t even get my rod flat. Using the paddle tail length I estimate it to be roughly 26 inches long.

There’s a very real chance I never catch a bass this big again. But you never really know… so I guess I just keep fishing.

Also I know he’s not on IG but shout out to my buddy Jerry. I 100% do not catch this fish without his advice. taken in Colorado River by @erniegorham

Colorado ‘24 - the one week a year I get to pretend to be a cowboy and a hunter. Ate my elk tag again, but was blessed to harvest a nice buck and spend 10 days having way too much fun with the guys. Until next year! taken in Colorado River by @erniegorham
