The Other Side of Serenity
(2025)

A line of approximately 5,500 razor blades. While a single blade is sharp and fragile; joined together, they form a harmless, solid structure.

The work explores the tension between individual fragility and collective rigidity. It reflects on how groups can come to believe that anything is possible, as reason and judgment become diluted in numbers.

Material: Approx. 5,500 Gillette 7 O’Clock Double Edge Razor Blades, artist’s frame.

Dimensions: 91 cm x 16 cm x 9 cm
Edition of 5 (sizes variable)

Constellation – Falling Stars
(2025)

Constellation - Fallen Stars is a collection of sorts that has grown over time. Part of the projectile repertoire of protesters and hooligans alike, the unscrewable top of bicycle bells is both a metaphorical and physical object of warning. Since the early 1980s, Thomasse has collected bicycle bell tops he finds in the streets. Presented alongside 50 individual ceramiccasts on a plinth of black, impact-resistant anti-protester shields, the bicycle bells form a constellation of resistance, both powerful and fragile, unpurposed and full of promise.

Extract from the text A Dialectics of Disquiet Notes on the work of Erwin Thomasse by Xander Karskens, taken from the upcoming publication Impulse Control and Composure, to be released in December 2025.

Material: Five black, impact-resistant polycarbonate plates, each 122.4 cm high by 97 cm wide, sourced from the Mojo High Fence range (normally employed for public safety purposes, including the segregation of high-risk zones and the facilitation of evacuation routes during protests or other large-scale events), approximately fifty handcrafted porcelain bicycle bells, approximately fifty stainless steel bicycle bells.
Dimensions: 5 x 97 cm x 122,4 cm ( 97 cm x 612 cm ).

Point Blank Rage
(2025)

Dutch riot police (ME) shield, laser-engraved with symbols referencing drug trade. The symbols are arranged according to the alignment of the stars above Eindhoven on 24 January 2021, a day of nationwide curfew protests in the Netherlands.

The contrast between a state-controlled instrument of power and imagery tied to illicit trade creates a striking visual and conceptual tension. The celestial alignment adds an ritualistic dimension, emphasizing the interplay between authority, conflict, and fate. The piece draws a parallel between the irrational escalation triggered by drug use and how misinformation spread online by foreign actors fuels confusion and unrest.

On 24 January 2021, protests against the Dutch Covid-19 curfew escalated into violent clashes with police, looting, and vandalism across several cities. In Eindhoven, police deployed tear gas to disperse a crowd of several hundred demonstrators. At least 30 people were arrested, multiple vehicles were set on fire, and shops around the city’s central train station were looted.

Point Blank Rage is part of Impulse Control and Composure

On view until 13:12 2025 @martin_van_zomeren Amsterdam (open Wednesday to Saturday, 1pm–6pm).

What does the artwork ‘Turn Panic Into Magic’ actually look like up close? 🌟
We follow artist Erwin Thomasse (@erwinthomasse) onto the roof of the Van Abbemuseum, where his light installation shines above the Dommel. The words ‘Turn Panic Into Magic’ slowly light up and fade away each evening, following the rhythm of a breathing exercise designed to calm panic: two and a half seconds in, five seconds out, two seconds pause. The work was created during the pandemic, as a beacon of hope and connection. Originally, there were five smaller light boxes with the same phrase, which were lent out to visitors to display at home or at work. In this way, a network of little beacons of light emerged during an uncertain time. ✨
